and i don't want to return to the US... i have gotten no solid offers from Japan... i am sort of thinking about Direct English in Seoul starting in August... the problem is i don't have my transcripts handy and i wonder if the position is going to pay enough to be worth the time and effort of survival in Japan or Korea until the start of the job... anyone on here have any advice on Direct English or on how much it would cost to survive in Korea until the job started in August...
i kinda feel as if i should fly home and then come back if they already offer tickets as their hiring process...
what about China or Thailand or Guam (not as ESLer)?
advice please... time is short...
thanks |

Taiwan is a good place to do ESL. You can get a job almost as quickly as in Korea, the weather is better, they pay pretty good (but no free plane ticket!) and it's there anyway. I've heard China and Thailand are nice but I don't know if you can make money there. |

Ahem....Don't say I told you.....but....You can work and earn money in Korea before your visa is processed. If the school is hiring you then just work and wait for your transcript to arrive. Then you're legal. Many, many people do this. |

forget Taiwan, yes there are plenty of jobs, but 1) no airfares, 2) no housing or rent subsidy, 3) you'll be pushing to get any sort of bonus,
4) holidays are normally 7-10 days and they count Saturdays as holidays,
5) you are the foreigner therefore you are mega rich and all prices in local stores rise by 150% the minute you walk in the door, 6) if you cannot speak chinese then you are fair game for all. On the plus side if you are single, white and healthy then expect to get numerious offers of marriage as per reason (5) above, do not expect any sort of arbitration in any disputes with Chinese owners, you are the foreigner therefore automatically you are wrong regardless. There are numerous taxes and charges on all things, just try getting your tax back before you leave, its been 8 months since I left and I AM STILL WAITING!!!!! I did 2 years in Taiwan for their government ( similiar to EPIK) and as far as I am concerned it was 2 years wasted, it is a bull shi@@@@ program and the bushibans are 10 times worse according to the people I spoke to. So be warned, I have been teaching for 12 years in Asian countries and been there done that and bought the Tshirt. |

AUGUST? You could start somewhere on July 1st if you wanted.. right now is the time that schools are desparate for replacements. You'd have your pick of the litter.
You also have a great opportunity to pick up some summercamp offers at this time. |

Go to Tokyo for money and innumerable lifestyle choices. Tokyo is the best city in asia for an EFL'er to be in, all things considered.
If not enough start up money for Tokyo, then come on down to Taiwan.
Taipei, Taiwan would be the next best EFL destination. |
