This is an excerpt from Ken Olbermann's blog because it's about a story on the news tonight. Olbermann has a show on MSNBC called Countdown. (The full story can be found at countdown.msnbc.)

Think of how we responded politically to 9/11. First there was overwhelming non-partisanship. Years of deteriorating relations between the parties vanished; were even apologized for. And within three years the Republicans were insisting that a Democratic presidential victory would mean more terrorist attacks. This year our "leaders" started the Nazi references Senator Byrd first, Senator Santorum next, most recently Senator Durbin.

And last night, Karl Rove slimed Durbin (and, of the Nazism invokers, only Durbin) and uttered the unforgettable line: "Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers."

******
Durbin was forced to apologize for using the N*** word in a comparison. Rove has stated an outright lie. Should he have to apologize?

Whose remarks were worse? Rove's or Dean's?

From another thread wrote:
Dean told a forum of journalists and minority leaders Monday that Republicans are "not very friendly to different kinds of people, they are a pretty monolithic party ... it's pretty much a white, Christian party."
Challenged on that during the NBC interview, Dean said "unfortunately, by and large it is. And they have the agenda of the conservative Christians."

I think the defining difference is that the GOP is defending the statement, and this probably has a lot to do with the political power Rove holds. For example, while Senator Biden remarked in response to Dean that "the rhetoric is counterproductive," in contrast, according to the Wash Post:

Quote:
other Republicans issued statements in support of Rove that cited such Democrats as Sen. John F. Kerry (Mass.), the 2004 presidential nominee; Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (Del.) and Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (Ohio).

But I think the most important question is, why should I care about either statements? Are they nearly as important as setting the agenda for social security, or refining our strategies in the struggles abroad? Are these real issues or petty partisan feuding dredged up by the media?

I find myself agreeing most of all to at least one thing that Dean said:
"This is a diversion from the issues that really matter: Social Security, and adequate job opportunity, strong public schools, a strong defense,"

Three days after September 11, Moore demanded that no military action be taken against Afghanistan:

Quote:
"Declare war?" War against whom? One guy in the desert whom we can never seem to find? Are our leaders telling us that the most powerful country on earth cannot dispose of one sick evil f---wad of a guy? Because if that is what you are telling us, then we are truly screwed. If you are unable to take out this lone ZZ Top wannabe, what on earth would you do for us if we were attacked by a nation of millions? For chrissakes, call the Israelis and have them do that thing they do when they want to get their man! We pay them enough billions each year, I am SURE they would be happy to accommodate your request....

But do not declare war and massacre more innocents. After bin Laden's previous act of terror, our last elected president went and bombed what he said was "bin Laden's camp" in Afghanistan -- but instead just killed civilians.

Michael Moore, "War on Whom?" AlterNet, Sept. 14, 2001.

Right on? Oh yeah, that's right, the House of Reps. didn't vote 434-1 for attacking Afghanistan. My memory must be playing tricks on me because I swear no Senator voted against it either.

Yeah, those damn liberals! voting against war ALL the time!

Unless you're going to tell me there are no liberals in Congess besides Barbara Lee, I'd say Rove is far from "right on."

I couldn't care less what Rove thinks. He comes off a lot less articulate than Dean, that much I know.
