Just watched one of those human interest stories on TV. I guess it's a human interest story anyway. Maybe a dog interest story.
Anyway, a couple's dog, Comet the Labrador retriever had lymphoma, a form of cancer. The couple checked with a vet and found out they could get a bone marrow transplant. A search was made to find a relative of the dog with the same blood type and the surgery was successfully done.
Because this was the first time, it cost $45,000. Future bone marrow transplants will only cost $20,000 to $25,000.
Now I'm a dog guy. I like puppies. I enjoy throwing sticks and shouting, "Fetch!"
But isn't this too much? Shouldn't the couple have let the dog go, get another puppy and donated the $45,000 to the tsunami victims say, or the people starving in Darfur or even to cancer research? (Yes, I know it's their money, but still...) |

Its a recreation item. You can make the family member argument or a PETA argument but this is close to a corvette purchase in that you don't need a corvette and worse, there is no resale value on the dog. If I made a million a year I'd do it. $500,000 a year, no way.
There is pet health insurance but I'm sure it didnt cover this. I put my free cat down for $500 exam fee.
There are some exotic breeder animals that are worth of plenty of money but this dog doesn't sound like one. |

If you can afford it, or if you really love your dog....?
Labrador retrievers are pretty cool.
Some (millionaires obviously) spend that on clothes per year. |
