I bet they wish it were so....but I don't seem to recall 25% of the men in, say, Cheongyang-gun being married to Filipinas.

International Marriage Rate Up in Rural Areas
One out of four men in farming and fishing villages is married to a foreign woman.
It is said that this is mainly due to Korean womens reluctance to marry men in farming and fishing villages.
The Korea National Statistics Office said on June 27 that the international marriage rate of Korean men working in the farming and fishing industry reached 1,814 last year, accounting for 27.4 percent of the total marriages of Korean men in the farming and fishing industry.
Considering that the number of international marriages last year was 25,594, or 8.2 percent of the total number of marriages (310,994), the percentage of international marriages of fishermen and farmers is almost 3.3 times the average international marriage rate.
Last year, the nationality of foreign women to marry Korean fishermen and farmers included China (879), Vietnam (560), the Philippines (195), Mongolia (54), Thailand (34), Uzbekistan (25), and Cambodia (15).
It was found that 269 Korean men from south Jeolla Province married foreign women, followed by north Gyeongsang (256), south Chungcheong (243), Gyeonggi (223), north Jeolla (213), and south Gyeongsang (168).
Meanwhile, as prejudices against international marriage have fallen, the number of Korean men marrying foreign women has gradually increased from 16,000 in 2001, 11,027 in 2002, 19,214 in 2003, and 25,594 in 2004. Also, the number of Korean women marrying foreign men has grown from 5,228 in 2001 to 9,853 in 2004. |

Does this mean that if the present trend continues, nearly 1/10 Korean men will be married to a foreign women in a couple of decades?! For some reason I have a hard time believing this..it seems..well..too good to be true. Assuming this skeptical statistic is true, how many Korean women are marrying foreign men?!!
Edit: I should have read more carefully.

Amazing isn't it? The "most racist country in the entire universe" allowing this to happen? The "most xenophobic people" one has ever known marrying people of another race and have babies? |

We all know they (male farmers) are doing it out of sheer desperation. If they didn't have to do it, they would never do it. The "most racist/xenophobic people in the universe" allow this because their own cultural mistakes are dooming their race.
Korean men are still the biggest cock blockers on the face of the planet. A huge percentage of them still hate to see "their" women with a foreigner. They still say rude things like, "Yankee *beep*" and "*beep*" to Korean women walking with a foreign guy as they pass.
You didn't notice the massive waves of hate and anger towards foreigners when a few photos of foreigners (clothed) were shown as they partied with Korean girls in February? In case you didn't see the original site, there were tons of Korean guys there doing the same things, however those pictures were totally ignored.
I've had an ajosshi start swearing and take a swing at a girl I was walking with once.
I've had college-aged men sit down next to myself, Itaewonguy and Kiwiboy at a bar and start trying to "take" our girls away as they asked over and over in Korean, "What are you doing here with Western guys?"
I've seen odd looks and heard whispers sent my way from insecure Korean men, and watched my then-girlfriend turn to them, squeeze my arm, and stare at them with a wicked smile.
Don't go into denial. Anyone who lives here knows this culture is as racist and xenophobic as any on the face of this planet.
But the good thing is that in a few years, I predict a few female TV/Movie stars will brave the anger, angst/hatred generated by Korean men and date a foreign guy. Then it will suddenly become the "in" thing to do.
It's inevitable. |

Foreign women here can find marriage frightening
By law, foreigners who marry Korean citizens are eligible to apply for citizenship here after two years of marriage, but they also must have their partner's consent. These preconditions for citizenship are problematic, because abuse usually starts in the first few months of marriage, said Kim Yun-jeong, a counselor at an Anyang social services center. "Even if the women are qualified to apply for Korean citizenship, most Korean men who marry foreign wives often don't agree to sign for their wives' Korean citizenship because they fear that the women might run away after obtaining the visa. We've seen a foreign woman with a child who's lived with her husband for five years, but he still won't agree to sign it."
"While international marriages are on the rise in Korea, children raised by foreign parents have always been excluded from the benefits of social welfare," says Yu Gyeong-sun, Mr. Kim's secretary.

Most of the wives being imported are from China and are ethnically Korean anyway. After that, it is Chinese wives from western China in which they are unregistered or adopted girls from farming families (western China is pretty much entirely rural and decades behind the image of eastern China we see on TV with things like neon lights, power, and running water). As such, moving to Korea into farming families is step up even if it sounds bizarre.
After that, it's Vietnamese women as the third largest import group.
At least that is what I remember from when I read up on the subject earlier this year. |

It was briefly mentioned on Arirang news....they made it sound like farmers only took foreign wives b/c they couldn't get anyone better(Korean women) to live in rural areas.
Reeked of the usual xenophobic/racist attitudes. |

Just because the new marriages is 1/4 to foreigners doesn't mean all the old wives have croaked. Overall percentage of women married to farmers is not anywhere near a 1/4. |

Um, what do you mean if they didn't HAVE to do it? Who is making Korean farmers get married to women of other races? Is someone holding a gun to their heads? They have to PAY for those wives, you know. Question their motivations if you want, but clearly they have no problems with getting married to a foreigner. |
