Quote:
SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- A South Korean soldier stationed along the Korean demilitarized zone has gone on a shooting rampage, killing 8 of his colleagues, the nation's defense ministry has reported.

Eight were killed and two were wounded in the Sunday morning spree, which occurred at Yonchon, a border station along the demilitarized zone that divides the two Koreas.

The alleged attacker, who was taken into custody for questioning, fired several rounds from a gun and threw a grenade into the barracks where the soldiers were sleeping.

The demilitarized zone is the world's most heavily fortified border, with almost two million troops facing each other on either side of the 248-km (151-mile) line.

-- Seoul Bureau Chief Sohn Jie-Ae contributed to this report.

Mild way to put it.

All that time on the line with a bunch of guys who may play the traditional pecking order game, and the guy lost, got angry and exacted revenge. Perhaps.

Put a bunch of trained killers together with loaded ammo in a stressful yet boring environment for long periods of time... what else do you expect?

Maybe the guy was on the line too long, a common hazard in the army.

Who knows? The media may reveal the details later.

It belongs in current events.

The General forum is for issues and aspects of general living for us in Korea.

All your Korean on Korean news with nothing but a tangential relationship to us ESLers belongs in current events.

This forum has been a godsend to keep many RR threads out of what should be relevant threads to our lives in Korea.

Threads about Koreans lives themselves are interesting but not directly relevant to our lives RR.

If this were to happen in Canada there would be fury at the politicians, army, people up top, to explain this and people's heads would roll....wonder how much time this will receive in the media since the evil foreigner wasn't directly involved.....or was he?....

Here it is from the BBC - they give a more resonable reason why it happened. Bullying.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4107754.stm

It does not seem so prominent in Korean news ...

Bullying is rampant in the military. They've been on a campaign to correct it, but have not been very successful so far. (I wonder if the effort is like traffic cops enforcing laws for a month and then ending the campaign.) I personally know:

a) a guy who was beat so often and was able to prove it that he was transferred to a different base

b) a group of three that were repeatedly beaten by an officer and the officer was transferred (but not punished in any other way)

c) and a guy who was repeated forced to give bj's to his commanding officer (and he says he knows several others who were forced to do the same)

It's a wonder more of these tragedies don't occur.

Incredible allegation

I was pretty shocked by it, too. Others have heard similar stories and mentioned them here. I can't attest to the other stories but I have no reason to disbelieve the guy who told me. I don't have any idea about his sexual orientation. When I asked if he couldn't refuse he said 'no', that he'd be beaten every day. I suppose if you put a younger guy who is trained to obey elders who also have a higher social position and the power to make your life a living hell for two years that it is possible.

I'm quite a bit older than most teachers and a lot of my students treat me like a favorite uncle. I often hear very personal stories. Very.

In any case, do you think this is an isolated thing in the Korean armed forces or that it's somewhat institutional?

I have heard roughly similar stories from men who served in the Korean army. And it seems to me I've also seen articles in the newspaper about the issue of sexual coercion in the military.

Didn't it just come out in the press that some conscripts were forced to consume fecal matter? Next to that, giving a bj sounds plausible.
