Little-known but valuable Canadian treasures, in honour of Dominion Day (feel free to add your own):
The Vestibules (formerly Radio Free Vestibule)

Clever, off-the-wall, and vicious, these guys leave me breathless. My only complaint is that they don't release much new material, and the shows they produced for CBC are hard to come by. Their Montreal-Jewish accents give them an unmistakeable flavour.
Stan Rogers

Heartbreakingly beautiful songs, lusty voice, salty tunes. Stan Rogers is the voice of the Canadian East Coast. His best album, according to me, is "Live! Between the Breaks" since the energy of a live performance and simple but powerful acoustic arrangements lay bare his robust poetry.
Spirit of the West- Home for a Rest

You don't know drinking songs if you've never heard this half-sung half-screamed anthem.
You'll have to excuse me,
I'm not at my best.
I've been gone for a month,
I've been drunk since I left,
and these so-called vacations
will soon be my death.
I'm so sick from the drink--
take me home for a rest...
TAKE ME HOOOOOOME (commence jigging like a maniac.)

Every Canadian recognizes these voices from their past, whether it's "Boot to the Head," "Mr. Canoehead," or merely the gruff Rick Green who later morphed into Red Green. |
