Country Men Go Looking Abroad for Wives
The National Statistic Office said Monday 6,629 farmers and fishermen got married last year, and 1,814 -- 27.4 percent - of them married a foreign woman, three times the national average. Of the total 310,944 marriages that took place in Korea last year, only 25,594 or 8.2 percent were between Korean men and foreign women. "This appears to be because Korean women avoid marrying men from rural areas, so men in such areas who cannot find wives are opting for international marriages."

wish I had my camera on me at the time, but we were driving along old highway 7 near Mangsang beach and saw several hand written signs advertising Vietnamese wives.
My wife didn't see the practical side of having a live-in maid. . . |

This is happening because agassis don't want to live on the farm. It will become a much more important industry when the present school generation reaches marriage age and the gender imbalance comes into play. |

I understand your meaning, but the reason they aborted them is because girls are considered a drain on the finances by some families. Girls likely won't be giving them money to finance their retirement when they are older (at least it used to be that way). Hence aborting them.
This is, essentially, Korean cultural society paying for its own cultural dues.
So the parents probably couldn't care less that they aborted the baby 25 years ago -- at least in any sense of "pride for Korea's future." |

It's possible the missing boys are in the bigger cities in the better schools. I know bunches of guys who lived away from home in middle and high school. |

These marriages are acts of desperation then? I've always been told mixed marriges are the result of two people falling in love and persevering against obstacles. This doesn't seem to be that. It looks like some guys were hard up mate wise and some girls were hardup financial wise. |

I dated/almost married a filipina TV reporter about 5 years ago. When I was with her family in the Phils, EVERYONE around us was happy and giddy -- couldn't believe people could always be so happy and kind.
When I look at the filipinas on the TV programs highlighting these mixed Korean/Filipina marriages, they ALL look dejected and sad. Almost depressed. Some of them really try to sound positive about it, and lie or say positive things, but it's all a show. I feel so sad for those women. I know it didn't turn out to be what they wanted, and I know life must be so hard for them.
Filipino people, as a cultural trait, will tell lots of little white lies just to make you/those around feel happy and comfortable. Actually, that's part of why I decided I couldn't marry my ex-fiance. I learned to pick up on some of the lies (but not all).
These girls are putting on their best show, but none of them put on a convincing one for those who know what to look for. |

I have two students, sisters, who are smart, funny, respectful and friendly. They're such an anomaly. Also they have skin a little darker than other Koreans. When I got out the map in the younger sister's class and talked about where we had travelled, she said she'd been to the Phillipines... now I get it! They must be half Filipina.
I wish all my students were! |

I'm sure they do it to the women... notably the mother in laws. Actually they did a study of mail order brides in North America and found mail order brides were generally shunned and poorly treated by women within the husband's social network (sister in laws, female friends, female coworkers) etc. |
