Not that I have any reason to care personally, but the following has appeared on msnbc:

Quote:
Supreme Court rules file-sharing services can be sued. Details soon.

As of yet, no details have followed. Stay tuned I guess.

The rest of the story has been posted.

I guess the article is authentic. However, the following makes me wonder:

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Internet file-sharing services will be held responsible if they intend for their customers to use software primarily to swap songs and movies illegally, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, rejecting warnings that the lawsuits will stunt growth of cool tech gadgets such as the next iPod.

I don't think the use of the word "cool" in this context really adds to the professionalism of the piece.

It doesn't, I guess, torpedo peer to peer. The guy who wrote bit.torrent won't hang. It's just a protocol and has many solid uses in legit software distribution. However, the ruling affects people who might creating something like "House Breaking Tools 2000! The ultimate set of tools to break into a home! Fool proof! Carry off TVs, money, fur coats that aren't yours! Do it today!" Sure the house breaking tools can be used to fix a rusty door...

It will all come down to intent.
