I've got a 2.4 Ghz processor with 768mb of RAM and would like to add more. I suspect that my motherboard tops out at 1gb but I am not sure. How would I find out? I"m not very knowledgable in hardware, I'm more of a software kind of geek.

I have two RAM slots one has a 512 card and the other a 256. Obviously if I top out at 1gb I'll just buy another 512, but if I can I would prefer to buy two 1gb cards.

If you have a PCIx board you'll have a max of 4 gigs no matter what, but it really depends on your board. Go here http://www.newegg.com/ or to http://reviews.cnet.com/Components/2001-3001_7-0.html?tag=cnetfd.dir and type in your board model and see what specs come up.

Is the board model printed on the actual board or can I find it by checking properties on my desktop?

After looking for help on a forum dedicated to computer geeks, I was directed to Everest Home Edition. This little program will tell you everything you need to know about your computer.

Oh yeah and it looks like I'm good to go for 2gb of RAM. Time to go shopping. Photoshop and InDesign CS2 are big memory hogs.

So I've determined I can have 2gb of RAM on my computer and that it isn't all that expensive. However the choices present on the linked page are so many, I'm not sure which to go with.

Pointers?

I've always found Technomart to be more expensive.

All this talk of RAM got me in the mood to go buy some more. Well, actually I had to go to the pc store anyway because my Burner stopped burning (can still read CDs and DVDs, just won't burn- I scratched my head for quite a while till I realized it had to be a hardware issue), and I had been wanting to get more RAM for a while but never seemd to get around to it.

Bought a 512MB stick of PC 2700 (DDR, 333MHz) for around $50 USD ($62 CDN before tax). That was from my local pc supplier. Why I'm posting is this: first I went to stores like Staples/Best Buy/Futureshop. I knew they would be more expensive, but I was surprised to see that for all 3 of these places they were double the price that I eventually paid.

Is there that much of a discrepancy in Korea for RAM? omi.co.kr link that Superhero posted is selling what I bought for 46,000.

And I was pleasantly surprised to see that going from 512 to 1024MB on a P4 2.53 gave immediate and noticable improvement.
I already thought my pc was pretty fast but it's nice to watch windows pop up instantly and to learn that what I had earlier thought was instant was in fact a quarter of second (or something).

I'm going to check it out, but have you tried Sisoft Sandra and/or Belarc Advisor? Between the two of them I've always found all the info/benchmarkls that I needed; How does Everest compare to them?

With a 32 operating system (ie all the windows up until Windows XP 64bit edition) the max ram it can use is 4Gig (2^32). Ie that's the most addresses it can access. If you happened to have 4gig in your machine not all of it would be used as some of the addresses are used for other things.
If you have a 64 bit operating system (and associated MB and CPU) it can access up to 1,800,000,000 gig (2^64) of ram... might need a few more slots on ya motherboard for that extra ram though Wink

Buy good RAM and not that cheap Kingston stuff. Corsair and Mushkin are what that I get. I usually match them in my system, matched size, continuous part number and the biggest size that my slot will allow. Your ram has a speed and specifications just like any other part of your PC. If you have a fast stick and a slow stick, the RAM will operate at the lower speed.

Then again 2 gigs is overkill for most systems and users. I do up to 100 Mb Cam files right now and have open three or four big programs (2 CAM) and 512 is doing alright. But back home I'd be doing much better.

Prior to this I had never used any of those programs, so I wouldn't be able to say.

only 3 or 4 big programs? that's not many. When I do my heavy lifting, I will generally have 1-2 multipage publisher documents open another 1-2 word documents, photoshop, 1-2 firefox with multiple tabs, possibly indesign, audacity as well as messenger & skype running in the background.

Gawd... I would hate to see your room. Can you walk in there, or are you tripping over clothes, board games, pizza boxes, and TV remotes?

Could you be more non-sequitor? I don't understand your comment.
