|
|
Hi,
I'm interested in getting a DVD player here in Korea and would like one that is region free(ie can play DVDs sent from home). Also, does anyone know of any good places back home that ship DVDs to Korea?(other than Amazon). The DVD selection in Korea is pretty limited. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. |

If you want region free, find the player you are interested in and then google the model number with the words dvd hack.
"pvd12vd3 region hack"
and that should tell you if you can use your remote control to change the region setting.
If you are living in Seoul and want to buy DVD's head to yongsan, the selection is just as good as back home, wherever that is. |

I find DVD player here overpriced no matter where you buy them from or at least from what I've seen.
DVD PLAYER - Best deal I've found http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002LHXBG/ref=amb_center-3_10030451_2/202-1929610-8447802 Multi region, plus its a uk model so all your going to need is either a new power lead, or a pin adapter. No need for voltage, freq or current converters. At about 40 bucks it seems like a steal compared to what I've seen in Korea. |

Yongsan always has a load of cheap Chinese DVD players- probably the same as you'll get from Amazon, but with a different brand name. I've seen them for 90,000 won- but at least you have somewhere to take them back to if they mess up.
Outside the Yongsan station building. |

My question was retorical as it is obvious that what you will pay in shipping will end up making your player more expensive than if you bought one locally. |

After going to Yongsan and seeing the same unit at every vendor at the same price 90-100,000won, I went to Carrefour and found one for 69,000won... it runs perfectly and has an automatic voltage converter (90-240) so I can take it home and use it with an adapter. So glad I didn't buy one at Yongsan. I bought mine about three months ago and still see the same one there for the same price... in Bundang. |

Agreed, Billy.
Go to Carrefour, next to Yatap station in Bundang. It's on the Yellow line. Look for a model by the Chinese company called Silady. No hacks needed... they are just region free.
I suggest buying the 109,000 won model that plays DIVX, AVI and Windows Media files. It is region free. I got mine from Carrefor -- happened to be on sale for 99,000 at the time. They have a cheaper "basic" model too, for closer to 70,000 (I think it's region-free too). I love being able to play tons of different files from my computer off of DVD-RW and CD, though, so I got the DIVX one!
There is a Samsung model that plays all of this stuff for about 150,000, but it ain't region free. |

Yeah, I saw that Silady. I just have no need for Divx or Avi files... the one I got was from a company called Bluesky. It plays all my movies from home that I ripped on dvd-r and dvd-rw's... region free is so nice for renting dvd's here too. I almost got the one you bought, instead I got this one and picked up a fan and a good bottle of Bordeaux with the money I saved. Vive le Carrefour. |

Guess that woudl depend on where abouts in Korea you live. Lets not forget that some people are lucky and get to teach on Jeju (I'm guessing thats a hard to trip to Yongsan). And from what I understand it's hard to get a player there for less than about 150,000 won. But that last peice is third party info. |

I just picked up the Silady one, but while watching my region 1 copy of King Of New York, I can't seem to access the 'widescreen' version no matter what I do with the screen setup. Is this a problem exclusive to multi-region players? Or is it a case of getting what you pay for?
On the plus side, I got Three's Company and SCTV on their way via Amazon. God bless Amazon. |

Are you smoking something? Yes, getting to Yongsan from Jeju is a bit of a pain in the butt. But there is this wonderful site called "Yesasia" that sells a great little region-free player for 100.000 or so and it's free delivery. So no big deal there.
But you can find regular players down here for like 85.000 won or so.

If I buy a region-free DVD player in Korea, what will happen with the language options on any DVDs I bring with me from the UK?
Whilst I realise the movies won't be dubbed into Korean, I'm rather worried about things like subtitles and menu options.
Is this going to be a problem? |
