Hey guys, I did a google to learn more about bit torrent files etc, but I would like it explained to me in a language that I understand Laughing

1. So what are the risks/benefits of downloading using Bit Torrent as opposed to simply Kazaa or Wimmx

2. Is 40 gb enough memory, I dont want too much just a few episodes of the simpsons etc.

3. Is it faster than Kazza

4. How can protect my computer from viruses that have been downloaded this way

5. Is there a program I can use to burn onto a CDRW disc. like a VCD programm or something

6. What FREE site do you recommend in using.

Thanks guys

>>it certainly is enough memory.. unless you will download a file that's over that... most files are less than 10 gb..

3. Is it faster than Kazza

>> it is not really... unless you download a file shared by many and have multiple sources.. i still think kazzaa is way faster

4. How can protect my computer from viruses that have been downloaded this way

>> the best way i'd suggest.... just get a good anti-virus and an ad removal type of software... (i personally use "ad aware" available at download.com)

6. What FREE site do you recommend in using.

>>> isohunt.com that's the one i use

1. So what are the risks/benefits of downloading using Bit Torrent as opposed to simply Kazaa or Wimmx

bit.torrent doesn't have such great search functions (although that's coming). You kind of have to wade into the slush pile and find what you want. Your download speeds are much better. More people who want the file, better your download speeds. As you download you also upload the bits you just downloaded. Everyone sort of passes on what they have. More sources that can pass on pieces too you, faster your DL speed. I've gotten like 250k DL speeds. In a system like Kazaa, you have to wait until one person is done down loading a file before you can start downloading it.

For music, it's usually used for downloading music by the CD or the discograph (ie everything Rush has ever put out). Not many people upload single music files.

The down side is finding files is all via web sites. You have to find the web sites, popular web sites end up not being able to support the traffic and crash (ie tvtorrents.com). Also, the RIAA

2. Is 40 gb enough memory, I dont want too much just a few episodes of the simpsons etc.

40 gig HD space. Lot of movies are about 1 gig. TV shows about 175 mb - 350 mb. You tend to have to watch things you dl quickly or burn stuff to CD. Alternatively, get a bigger external HD in a USB box. Costs about $140 tops at Yongsan.

3. Is it faster than Kazza

Yes. Way fast. See above.

4. How can protect my computer from viruses that have been downloaded this way

Don't DL exe files. Download music/movie files. A huge number of pirated programs come with trojans. Get a firewall program like zonealarm. Don't let anyone try to connect to your lsass.exe process.

6. What FREE site do you recommend in using.

Torrents are sort of like internet flags saying that you have a file open for sharing. They spread as more users download them from torrent sites (directs them to where the torrent is located) The more active a torrent, the faster D/L speeds because of more users to D/L from.

Torrents also die. Most torrents are either newer material or something in high demand.

Another thing about torrents is that the file cannot be modified. A torrent points to the original file or just copies of it. It prevents someone from tampering with it and inserting malware. But there are bad torrents out there that were intended to be malware. But as users D/L them they usually don't keep them (if they know about it) and as a result don't keep the torrent active.

I have really good luck with Edonkey. Fast, great number of large files (tons of discographies) and stable. Doesn't die either.

Bit Torrent is great. Its way faster then Kaaza or Edonkey, I never hit 300k/s with edonkey or kazaa. Azerous is great best bit torrent prog out there. www.torrentreactor.com www.mininova.com. Problem with bittorrent is that there is no old stuff and its mainly for programs and games. Great for xbox games.
