University teachers' contracts are not being renewed after 3 years service at most Korean Universities.
I understand that this is a 'cynical' reaction to a government directive - meant to give foreign teachers a better deal by offering them better working/pay conditions after they have been at one place for three years.
My questions:
-) Does anybody know what those improved conditions would be?
-) Is there an official source that I could contact for further info?

Not at my Uni... Some co-workers have been there 10 years...
I heard Korea University has a 5-year rule. |

Yes, I know some people have been in their jobs for a long time -but this is a 'new' rule. Everyone at our place (and at least 5 other places I know) have been asked to leave if they have been there for three years - the reason given is the avoidance of the new gov't legislation...??

This is really stupid. Some of these lifer-teachers really like it here, esp the Canucks. The kind of I have a house and kid lifer-teacher. This move inspires less loyalty and ill will for no reason. I wasn't aware there was a problem in this area that needed to be adressed so abruptly. The relationship between uni and foreign teachers is the most mature and least problematic. The relationship should be strengthened and emulated.
It sounds like jealousy. The move will decrease the quality of the teaching
provided. |

Agreed but....The original (gov't) intention was to improve the lot of foreign university teachers by giving extra benifits to people who have more than 3 years service at one place.
It's the "universities" that want to avoid implementing it as it would cost them more money. |

Ok, TY for clearing that up. So its like hagwans ditching people due to severance. I'm not certain how onerous the new benefits are but the unis might fall into good and bad camps depending on how they comply.
The gov't could also tax the unis generally and provide the benefits themselves. The argument against that is a uni could with hold pay saying "you get this from the gov't so we don't have to pay." That would be a really business for them to try that.
I'm sorry I missed that. I'm hungover. |

However, I think that some Universities have come up with this "rule" just to avoid firing somebody who is not doing a good job OR who is making more $$$ than if they were to hire a new guy. In other words, the Uni. just says they have no choice but they have to let you go because of the "rule". |

,,,don't think so... people being released at the end of this semester are on the same salary as that being offered to their replacements and are "extremely" good teachers.
I'm not due for the boot - just yet...but would like to get more info now.... |
