i have heard that pagoda is not hiring foreigners anymore for part-time stuff because of some immigration crackdown. if i were doing privates (which i would never do because they are illegal) should i be seriously worried right now? what if i were working through a small agency. would there be a chance the immigration police would show up at the company at which i was teaching, or would it be more likely that they would pop up at the agency itself, and harrass them? anyone have any experience with this? is this crackdown big time?

thank god i have a good legal job and would never teach privately. as always, the government knows best right? of course.

Funny you mention Pagoda because they have a slew of adds looking for teachers.

They don't seem to mention anything about no-whities.

Honestly, I wouldn't wok for them though, but that is for other reasons.

I love the wording of this. Laughing Anyways, if your privates are coming to you thru an agency, then I'd be worried. At least until the end of the summer. If your privates are the product of your own networking or through friends, I wouldn't worry about it, too much.

Hey Chronic,

Thanks for your post.

Why would one worry about privates through an agency? What could happen? i mean, how would it be more dangerous?

If the agency was "raided" (busted/fined), they might just be encouraged to give up the identities/locations of all their teachers.

Imm. show up at the agency and ask for all of their resumes, files, etc. Then the dogs come after you.

Korean Immigration couldn't catch the clap in a
South African brothel.

Unless you are really stupid you have no problems:

1/ Never give your real name
2/ Never give your passport - duh!
3/ Never give your phone number
4/ Never give your address
5/ Never use agents

If you really want to be careful put your schedule and
contact numbers into a simple code. Then even if immigration
catches you they won't be able to contact any of your students.
I change the last number on all my phone numbers and similarly
change the addresses of my classes.

I'm just waiting to hear if immigration busts a certain poster who advertised looking for a roommate on the Buy/Sell/Trade Forum--not smart what he put in the ad IMO.

Especially 1,2,4 and 5...

I don't know how many people give their names, adresses and phone numbers...

Some even give the places of work...

I tell my privates its on a need to know basis...you don't need to know...name, OK but the rest no way...

BTW...my privates are legal and I'm still that worried at times...

Wise precautions.

However they will not shield you from immigration if one of your students turns you in. Then all immigration has to do is follow you around (like you would notice) and keep tabs on you then bust you.

Not that hard and it does happen.

Doing pvts is just a decision that comes with risks. If you do them, you just have to accept that you might get busted and deported along with paying a hefty fine.

You "teachers' doing privates illegally....why come to another country and break the law? Is it so difficult for you to get a visa? No degree? You planning to continue to go through life screwing over others and skirting the law whenever...
I would never go to another country and knowingly break the law. No matter how minor it may seem to me.
Immigration problems within the ESL industry exists partly because of illegal foreign teachers.
When I hear or see a FT teaching illegally...I have absolutely qualms about turning them in. None at all!
I think all you legal teachers should be doing the same...let's clean up this mess and get the heat off.
Those of you who see wrong and do nothing are just as guilty as the person breaking the law.
I just don't get it...maybe I'm just a dumb SOB...but it is NOT your country!?! Why break the law?
