I would call my self high-beginner or low-intermediate. I've been in Korea a year, studying very lazily most of that time. My vocabulary is only maybe 450-500 words but that gets me by for simple conversations, like what I did yesterday, etc.

Once I got comfortable at a 'survival' level I got lazy and plateau'd. But once I started working hard (in February) in two months I could speak in full sentences and tell stories. One of my proudest early moments was getting the cute girls in the front office to crack up by telling them how I've always wanted to find some of those dancing go-go girls and watch them dance while drinking beer and eating ramen.

Been here 9+ years...I would rate myself a solid intermediate (though my students seem to think I am fluent the way they talk to me...at the speed of light) I never really took any lessons...just sort of picked it up here and there...wife is Korean...daughter is learning and so therefore must I. I would probably speak a lot better if I actually tried to study. It's just hard when you teach and use English for most things every day. (I know...excuses...excuses...they are like anni-see if the swear filter gets that one
I guess I feel a little ashamed that I am not fluent after living here for so many years. Is it too late?

1. I'd say I'm at a high beginner level. I can formulate basic sentences in present past and future tenses and can combine sentences. I negoitate meaning and often find that a prolonged conversation can get out of my depth.

2. Been in Korea 2.5 years.

3. I've been going to night classes at the SNU and sookmyung. Takes me 90 minutes to get there. so I've had to go out of my way to learn korean.

it's hard to judge it objectively, right? sometimes I feel like i'm a solid intermediate, but other times i know my korean is shit. and there's a lot of weird gaps in my knowledge. I can't count past 40 in the pure korean number system. what is 'purple?' �����? i don't know it off the top of my head. what is 'nurse?' ��ȣ...��...��? don't know that either really.

go to to mith's board and look at the newspaper article translation thread. my name is 'dude' there although often i just signed in anonymously. i guess that would give you an idea.

does anybody have a korean test they could post up or give a link to? i have one but its only applicable to pretty advanced people.

Beginner. About 300 words, which means I have the bare essentials when it comes to getting around, and a sketchy notion of the grammar.

I learned Hangul on the plane ride over, and paid very close attention to the commonly used phrases around me. I purchased 3 different text books, and I pull them out on long bus rides or when I need to fall asleep quickly. I make of an effort than most people I know, but I'm really bad at studying for reasonable periods of time.

I work in a school that teaches the same lessons at least 7 times, to 7 different classes, so I've benefited from the repetition, and definitely picked up some classroom Korean, and the translations of what we've been trying to teach them.
