Hazardous Chemical Emissions Increase 11%
Emissions of harmful chemicals increased by 11 percent in 2003 from a year ago, the Ministry of Environment reported on Sunday. The toxic chemical methyl alcohol accounted for 19 percent of the leaked chemicals, followed by xylene with 15.8 percent, toluene with 13.7 percent, methylethylketone with 9.3 percent, isopropanol with 5.3 percent and normal hexane with 3.5 percent.

Xlyene vapor may cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, while inhaling normal hexane causes nerve damage and paralysis of the arms and legs. And 1,042 tons of seven cancer-causing chemicals, including benzene, ethylene oxide and vinyl chloride, was also released.
