I recently applied for a new teaching position here in South Korea, and was told I need sealed transcripts from my University, to be sent to my prospective employer...
I also heard that there is a lot of people applying for teaching positions with fake degrees....
Then just last week a comment was made at my current school, where it was said that South Africans are the worst offenders when it comes to fake degrees.... They are said to be the only one's applying with fake degrees..
As I am a South African, I took offence to it.....
Now I want to know if some of you have experienced the same too??
If anyone has a statistic of who the greatest offenders are, it would be great to hear from you..

I don't think there are statisics avaliable for that.
Chances are the highest offenders are Canadians ... as they are the highest number of teachers over here.
Now that being said, I think you'd be surprised how many are over here with fake degrees.
My biggest worry though is.. how many are here with criminal records??? |

Haha...the logic of some over where they get some of their stuff. It probably originated as: One SA African has a fake, plus a rumor about a 2nd down the street, and then BOOM, the conclusion is formed that all SA's must be stinking up the joint with fake degrees.
Almost as bad as this place with the over-generalizing about 'all Koreans are...' and 'all hogwans are...' based on solitary experiences.  |

I have a criminal record....I was even thrown in the hoosgow for unpaid speeding tickets.
The record is for failing to appear to fight the ticket. This was back in the 80's before they changed the laws in Canada. But it still shows up on my CRC....so does that make me unfit to teach in Korea? |

My belief is, if you've done the time, you've paid for the crime and it should have no bearing on employment, travel, or entrance as long as a reasonable amount of time has passed to prove that you won't commit crimes again.
Now, i am sure someone is going to bring up the pedophile problem...and it is a problem, but if there is a "habitual" offender who cannot stop themselves, then the onus should be on that person's home country to a. keep them locked up forever, b. put a microchip in them to identify them to law enforcement or immigration wherever they go, and c. cut portions of their anatomy off. But non-habitual offenders are just that....their likelihood to repeat offend are nil.
However, most crimes are not sexual in nature, and many have no history of repeat offending....why should those people be disallowed from a career because they made one poor lapse in judgement? In Canada, person A gets caught with a joint 5 years ago and gets busted, does 3 months (usually suspended), and now has a criminal record. Person B gets caught with a joint today - and no criminal anything. Person C has a joint and doesn't get caught at all. If they all have degrees and want to work here, why should they have to go through red tape? Why does that make any of them unfit?
And here's another interesting thing about criminal records (in Canada at least). A person convicted of a crime...whether it be theft, drunken driving, or whatever, only has to wait 3 years (summary offense) or 5 years (indictable offense) and apply for a pardon and pay less than 1000 dollars to get their record struck.
So, theoretically, after 3 - 5 years, anyone who committed really bad crimes but did their time can have a clean criminal record.

Yeah, that'll be me. The need to check criminal records is not to make sure they don't have any misdemeanors like failure to appear in court for jay-walking. It's to keep the sex offenders and people guilty of violent crimes and anything else that could be a clear danger, particularly to a classroom full of kids.
Dismissing this simple and moral notion on the grounds that criminal checks may not always be fair to the people who have small, technical misdemeanors on their record, is so ignorant that I'm under the impression that I misunderstood either yours or Grottos intended message. |

I for one am all for doing criminal record checks to prevent predators or violent offenders from being able to continue on their career in another country.
My point is: what ramifications would my record have on my employment here.
Why didnt I pay the ticket? I forgot about it...I felt it was a bogus charge and was planning on going in to fight it but .....  I was busy with work and a few other projects and by the time I remembered I was sitting in a jail cell trying to figure out just why I was there. I got bailed out by a buddy, paid the fine for the ticket and was free and clear. But it still does appear on my record...I guess I should get the pardon wheels in motion and clear it up. |

Why would you take offense? Can you or can you not buy degrees from formerly prestigious universities in South Africa? |

Maybe they were talking about all the rockspiders in Tawan with fake degrees.
Also, I've never been asked for transcripts when applying for my E-2. Then again, why would they ask a suave, respectable man such as myself for such petty things? |

Didnt bother staying for dinner. I basically got booked in, shoelaces and belt confiscated, my buddy showed up paid my bail and walked out the other door.....once I got my belt and shoelaces back. The whole situation was kind of stupid. But hey in Canada we have more police on traffic than any other area of law.
So if you do speed you have a 10 times greater chance of getting caught than if you commit another crime..strange but true. |

| The UK is currently part of a scheme which aims to introduce a world database of sex offenders which would make it much easier for authorities in foreign countries to catch anyone convicted of sex crimes trying to work elsewhere. |
