Dalai Lama's G8 Poverty Appeal

Wednesday, July 6, 2005 Posted: 0116 GMT (0916 HKT)

Dalai Lama: Compassion and commitment to share are needed.

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) -- The Dalai Lama has called on G8 leaders to do their utmost to ease the plight of millions suffering from poverty.

In a statement read out by rock singer Annie Lennox, the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader said on Tuesday the G8 summit beginning in Gleneagles, Scotland on Wednesday had "positive potential."

I'm not impressed with the Live 8 concert. I don't know how many know this, but I sure didn't until just yesterday--IT DIDN'T RAISE ANY MONEY. In fact they specifically said "We don't want your money." They're just trying to "raise awareness" to pressure the G8 into acting.

So the leaders of the most powerful nations, who've been merrily neglecting the titanic misery in Africa for as long as they've been in power, will be shamed into action by Annie Lenox reading a letter from the Dalai Lama.

Right.

All of those stinking rich stars who could give millions, who could encourage others to raise tens of millions, didn't. And liberals are treating them like heroes for a totally symbolic action. Many of the same liberals blaming Bush for not asking for any sacrifice, fail to blame Annie Lenox and Bob Geldof for not asking any sacrifice from Americans.

In the aftermath of the first concert, the point was made that pouring money and aid into africa is not really working.

Political and trade change is the key to it. Changing politicians attitudes can only come from threats from voters. So therefore the concert is trying to prove voters consider this an important issue by signing up and attending the concerts.

Interestingly enough it was mentioned that the only famine in recent history that did not occur in a active warzone was in North Korea a few year ago.

I respect the Dali Lama and all, but I am getting sick of people bitching and moaning that America does not do enough...who is to say we don't do enough?! they are just a bunch of sanctimonious, narissistic, jerk-offs...(most of them, at least) just who the hell do they think they are to "demand" that Americans cough up more of their hard-earned money??

just some facts to consider about "stingy" America

according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and the Hudson Institute, church collections, philanthropists, and company-giving amounted to:

independent US organs-6.2bn

US companies-2.7bn

US universities(mostly scholarships for foreign students)-2.3bn

US government-16.3bn

US churches, synagogues, mosques-7.5bn

US immigrant remittances overseas-40.1bn

now, for country totals in 2003

France-7.2bn

UK-6.3bn

EU private sector donations-1.5bn

President Bush has pledged to increase aid from 1.2bn/year to 8.7bn/year by 2010

so, America doesn't give enough???? just shut the *beep* up and get off your high horse......

now, what about Africa???

a continent of abundant natural resources but rife with poverty....why not demand that the government in Zimbabwe return the land it stole from the white farmers (some who were murdered) who, by the way, had made Zimbabwe the breadbasket of Africa...now it's the basketcase of Africa...can't even feed themselves

I submit that the problems of Africa are largely cultural, just as the problems of black America are...it's a culture of irresponsible reproduction, tribalism, submission to despots (read-race lords like Jesse Jackson in the US), anti-capitalism, and unprotected sex leading to disease and death....confiscating America's wealth is NOT GOING TO CHANGE THIS!!!

I feel bad for the innocent people of Africa but the problem is not one that will be solved by pouring more aid down a black (no pun intended) hole....

the culture needs to be changed...the despots need to be ousted, and perhaps the whole continent should be turned over for rule by the EU and America together....

If you want to make comparison surely one of the EU vs America would be more appropriate economically. I am sure tha one would tell us more.

I read the article, and they are calling on G8 nations, not the United States alone, to help.

And, yes, intended or not, the pun is quite telling. Rolling Eyes
