I have a P4 - 2.4 ghz processor
most importantly I have 512 MB ram! so my GAY question question is this..

when I download many items from Torrents my CPU runs slow right..
ok.. now it really ticks me off when I want to watch to movie or play a game while I am downloading.. but I cant becuase my PC has turned into a turtle!

so all I can think of is buying more ram..
if I buy another 512 stick or a 1gig stick will that fix my problem?

or has downloading have nothing to do with RAM and CPU usage?

CTRL-ALT-DEL once to see your processes and check the stat at the bottom "CPU usage". This will tell the story as far as CPU.

It's really hard to say why your system chugs. Alone, a P2P app shouldn't be taxing on a 2.4 nor on 512MB or RAM. These apps in concert with other ones and other processes are another story.

What is running in the background? What AV proggie do you use? A firewall? Depending on the product and the settings, these can hold a system down.

ZA Pro doesn't fare well with Overnet, for exapmle. Eats into the RAM as ZA tries to monitor all of the connections. I have a GB, so I don't really notice when it climbs up to 80MB of usage, but on a 512MB machine, that would be a chunk.

Before you rush out and buy RAM (which is cheap, so you may as well....512 upped to 1GB...you will notice), try shutting down non-essential backgroud programs one at a time until you find the culprit(s).

its my torrents..
if I download like 10 movies all going at once my cpu is on 100..

Sounds like that prog will max out any CPU. If it were me, I would uninstall it....it's a sign of bad coding/programming when this starts happening.

I guess finding a BT site with forums would be the way to go. See if this is unique to you or not.

I still say that it may not be BT that's doing this. It sounds like a combination of things...I mean, a lot of satisfied people use BT, right?

This means that it's something about your setup that is not jiving. Now, what that is is hard to say. Unless you take a screenie of all processes and post it here, it will be hard to tell exactly what's running underneath the veneer.

By the way....depending on the game, you won't be able to play while using P2P. I can't play while downloading....skips and jumps.

system idle process is running at around 80

but that cant be the problem can it? system idle doesnt eat up CPU usage does it?

Which BT client are you using? I have 512 MB of RAM and only a Pentium 3, 1.3 processor, and I never have any kind of a problem when I use Bitlord.....

10 movies via torrent = a lot of reads and writes on the HD.

If system idle process is around 80, then obviously there's no problem there, but I'm not sure whether or not your drive is waiting for data to be read when you have that many access/writes on the drive. You'd want an 8MB 7200RPM drive at the least with that sort of data transfer happening.

It might be worth getting another HD for you to download to (just a leech drive) and do your other stuff like web/watch movies/play games on the original drive.

An investment yes, but you were going to fork out for more RAM anyway. :)

If you have extra cash, like $1,200, build a second computer just for downloading and for media storage. Get an ATI "All in Wonder" series card if you want a remote control and tivo-like recoding of live television. Make it a small form factor computer, like Shuttle:

I just built my first Shuttle, and it's great. Small, portable, quiet, but still has two hard drives and enough power for the latest video cards. And it fits in a backpack I can use as a carry-on when I move.

Hmmmm... you are getting up to 10 torrent connections and then your system starts to crawl hey? I would say that it may be worthwhile for you to look into getting a 4226 patch. That is hack your TCP/IP settings to allow more connections which XP SP2 turned off. Google it or follow one of the following links:

Unfortunately for you, the main patcher for this issue (www.LVLlord.de), has recently experienced a server crash and therefore the download for his newest EXE version which is uninstallable has gone with the availability of his page. I have already put 20 minutes into panning different sites for the download but I figure that you can do just as well.
