When I was living in Toronto, I went into a dry cleaner's shop just off of the Danforth near Chester station and asked if he had any clothes that anyone might have not picked up for 8 months or so that he would like to get rid of. Well, his eyes lit up like a free game and exclaimed, do I ever! He brought out some really nice clothing from the back and simply told me to take what I wanted, pay the ticket and get it out of here. Really nice clothes. A sweater from the Andes, Polo Shirts, Ralph Lauren, etc. What a carch that was!

Don't know if it would be as good here as the dry cleaning shops act more like laundry shops.

Any other cool ideas on how to save money living in Korea? We gotta be frugal!

Sorry man, but this idea is the furthest thing from "cool" I've ever heard. Especially given the fact that you'll be sporting pink v-neck sweaters 3 sizes too small for you.

For some mad reason Becks beer, imported from Germany, is 1,560 won per bottle at Emart. All the other imported beers in bottles, including Heineken are 2,300 won. It's the pale Becks, not the dark. Go to Carrefour and the same Becks is 2,300 won.

At least the Emart here where I live. Which also, at the end of the night, wraps the deli stuff up selling four packs for 5,000 won. Like Chop Chae, potato salad, garden salad, and so on. Things that are usually 2,500 won each.

Avoid these places at all costs for groceries. There are little supermarkets around that are much cheaper. Also, dont eat out...it is amazing how much money that can eat up.

don't eat out? I really don't think a serving of bibimbap or dongkaseu once a day is going to set you back a hell of a lot of money.

Now if you mean more upscale food, then I see your point.

Save money?

I don't know how.

But would advise...... drink less.

Don't skimp on good food. We need that.

But I would argue many of us need to drink too, to deal with the damn place.

Just don't eat Pizza Hut or expensive Western food everyday. Drink is cheap if you stick to the pitchers of Hite, Cass and OB. It's easy to live on 100,000 a week. I know that 'cas I'm not working until September so the money I have has to last!!

My snacks and pig ears are off limits people...please, I don't want to catch any of you anywhere near my food in this "Suave de Monay" scheme of yours.

Eat and drink Korean style.

You can do that in restaurants

every night

a different place a different dish,

all month long,

and still only put a small dent in your paycheque.

Sorry to steer away from the topic but my mouth is now watering for some yummy Greek food from the Astoria. Smile Crying or Very sad

Also,

In February I got to hear Norman Jewison speak about his new book at a church just by Chester and Danforth. It was my birthday. I got his autograph. Great area there.

Back on topic now... Single people can split the cost with a buddy, and buy in bulk at Costco or Wallmart. Stock up. Freeze it.

Regards,

K-in-C

Things vary in price a lot in Korea. If you have a semi decent sized freezer you can do well. I save money and lots of time by always having a few good meals in the freezer. I got a really nice curry and a chilli in there at the moment going to make a stew tomorrow.

It is often cheaper to eat out in Korea, but a lot of the cheap places to eat suck donkey balls. Preparing good food takes a long time, preparing a lot and freezing some of it and living of that stuff for decent dinners is pretty good.

Life is too short for cheap soju and bad cheap food. By all means have a budget but don't be a cheap wanker. Korea has enough of those types teaching here already.

I'm wondering about those last few lines. A lot of people are just lazy or disinterested in cooking, not necessarily "cheap". Many single foreigners, in particular, like having proper full-course meals with others, and this generally means dining out. But they eat like street dogs when they're on their own. Variety and quality of food honestly don't matter to a lot those people. Or they do matter, but those people just lack the discipline to shop and cook decent meals for themselves. Just because they eat like mangy street dogs doesn't necessarily mean they haven't the money to eat like adult humans.

Eating out at a half decent place is a lot cheaper than buying all that crap for a full course homemade meal.

I had never seen it, but a friend took me to this soju hoff place in Seohyun where you get 3 plates of food for about 9,800 won. It's on the 4th floor across from McDonalds, and is packed with people.

Darned cheap for an evening out Korean-style, and it's all younger folks in their 20s/30s!
