ok. so I got a buddy who wants to come to teach in Seoul, but only for 6 months. IF he signs a year contract and breaks it after 6 months. will the school take his arrival flight off his final paycheck? and. anyone know do 6 month contracts exist here?? i have yet to see any..but perhaps you know of certain schools that offer these contracts? |

he can just do a mid-night run after getting his sixth month pay
some schools are looking for a replacement - esp public schools - for the remaining term
there are some short term contracts kicking around - for 6 weeks up to 3 months
he can try to make a 6 month contract, but I doubt most schools would pay the flight. |

Sorry KeninSeoul but I don't think encouraging or recommending someone to do a midnight-run is particularly helpful for us English teachers in general or for future English teachers either. |

And you wonder why some people question the professionalism of ESL teachers in Korea.
Maybe he could try to steal the hagwon's computer, too. Or run up a huge phone bill before he sneaks off.

I think this is how it generally works with these damnable year contracts (which they all are). You can quit before your contract ends but if you do it before the six month mark, the school will charge you for your airline ticket, visa run, the kitchen sink, blah, blah, blah. At least expect to lose a months pay. If however you quit after the six month mark, as long as you give at least a month notice, you are free to leave without any kind of deductions from your pay. |
