I bought this DVD a few months ago, but haven't watched it because I had heard that it is actually a sequel to Wong's 'Happy Together,' which I haven't seen. Is this true, or can one watch 2046 without having seen 'Happy Together'?
Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi. Yummm.

Yeah, you can watch one without having seen the other; they are not so much sequels as movies with characters and plot lines in common.
Just be warned that Wong Kar Wai is an ardent student of the French school of film making.
Loooong drawn out scenes, lots of wistful looks, and deep conversations about the meaning of life and love. |

This is not quite true; it's a semi-sequel to Wong Kar Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. While 2046 has echoes of the earlier film in terms of themes and the like (and has the same lead male character), there is no connection between the two films in a narrative sense.
In other words, you don't need to see ITMFL before 2046 to understand it. Though, personally, I would watch ITMFL first, because it is the much better film. |

I loved 2046. Beautiful... and In the Mood for Love is a movie I watch at least once a month... along with Whale Rider, City of God, and Amelie. |
