last night i was having a bbq outsied with some of my neighbors, and i saw some cool stuff i'd never seen before, except on the discovery channel. i live way out in the middle of nowhere, so i'm sure this stuff is pretty commonplace if i should ever want to witness it again.

the first thing i saw was a spider sucking the liquid life out of a big bug it had captured in its web. cool stuff indeed, although the girlfriend didn't agree. then i saw a different spider making his web. not quite as immediately and violently exciting, but really great to watch while i drank beer and waited for the hamburgers and ribs to cook. i watched until he finished, and then he went to the middle to wait. not five minutes later, one of his support strings broke, and the web collapsed into itself. i really felt for the poor guy. but after a few minutes, i saw him lower himself down to the ground and back up again to restart the process. this was good for me, because i didn't get to witness him settiing the structural threads the first time around.
then i walked up the steps where it was really dark, except for a few big planters with two trees a piece in them, and a light between the trees. there are some beautiful spider webs in there. one of them was particularly nice, and i got to see a big spider attack and devour a little green bug immediately after it got caught in the web. score!
the spiders around here seem to live a lot like the people in seoul. there were so many webs between these two trees, it was hard for me to see how any of them would catch any bugs. thsee were different species of spiders, too, all living almost right on top of one another. wild stuff.
then i saw a big-ass toad. i've seen toads before, and he didn't do anything really cool. a bug did come around it, and i was hopeful, but i think i scared him off before he could think about attacking the bug. he couldn't have been but so scared though. he didn't jump away. he just sor of moseyed in a toad-like way.
seems a little ironic that i had to come to korea to witness nature's fury in action.

Yesterday I saw a foreigner (50 ish) walking on the sidewalk. He stopped and picked up a cigarete butt and pretended to smoke it. I figure the "nature's fury" that is Korea in general has overtaken him and made hima little loose in the head. Or else he was like that when he came, who knows.

I saw a spider catch a fly and start sucking it while it was buzzing really crazy trying to get free... the buzzing slowly faded until it was dead.... it was gross... everytime I hear that crazy buzzing it gives me the shivers... ew....
