In the adult class a 26 year old Korean male is heading to Canada to work at Blackcombe ski resort (two hours from Vancouver) for three months of the winter on their ski patrol. He figures he'll save 4,000 dollars in that time. Then, in the spring, he wants to travel.
I recommended he take a Green Tortoise adventure bus tour starting from San Francisco. There are lots of great trips on that line, cheap and exciting. So we're talking about these wonderful trips. He hasn't looked into, yet (he's heading to Canada in Dec. and would be entering the U.S from Canada around mid-March), getting an American tourist visa.
I asked the school manager, a kyopo who moved to the U.S. from Korea at age 18 and stayed 20 years, if it would be easy for this fellow to get a tourist visa, and he said no. That's ok because he can fly from Vancouver to Cancun, Mexico, and do a two week Green Tortoise bus tour of the Yucatan, Belize, and Guatemala for 850 U.S. Then stay on, if he likes, beside the beach snorkling, diving, drinking, dancing and so on until flying back to Vancouver and then Korea.
Would anyone know how easy it is for your average 26 year old Korean Uni student to get a tourist visa to visit the States for a month or so? What are the chances he'll get it and how to apply and how far in advance? Is it worth the effort, or should he just plan on going to Mexico, which is cheaper anyway, and so much fun, anyway?
It seems a shame to miss seeing the redwoods, Hollywood, Yosemite, Las Vegas, L.A., Route 66, the Grand Canyon, and other great places. |
