Here's a tip. I bought a new laptop, my other one died. The motherboard or BIOS chip or something fried. I hated the bloody thing anyway. A few months back I got a HD external case with a 60 gig drive. You hooked it up via USB. It's great for backup. I'm not stupid and do regular back ups of my critical files with my USB external drive. I also managed to backup most of my recent critical files before the laptop 100% gave up. However, there are some recent fonts and a few little things I'd still like to get off my laptop drive. No problem, I thought, buy another external case and plop in that drive.
So I bought a case. I got it home, got ready to plug in my drive and... oh the case supports IDE drives. Turns out my Compaq laptop uses an interface called "ultra ATA". I went to Yongsan on Sunday and basically no one there knew WTF I was talking about... "ultra ATA". I think I spotted one that said it handled both IDE and ATA connection types. But I don't want to blow another $30. I'll go back later with my actual drive and figure it out.
Anyway, a heads up before you buy an external case for your old HD. Figure out if its IDE, ATA, or even SCSI. For some reason IDE seems almost universal in Korea. |

And here's the rub if you need ATA: according to my sources at Yongsan, there are only three you can choose from. They know this so prices are about 3x IDE. Not to mention them being unwieldy beasts too... |

Mindmetoo, my coworkers and I think you're confused about this.
The Ultra ATA and IDE drives should be compatible. (The new standard is SATA, which is would cause you some problems, but it doesn't sound like that's what you're working with.) One of my sharpest coworkers is thinking that you may need a special IDE adapter that would convert desktop IDE to the smaller laptop IDE. |

My laptop HD has a female connector but there are no female pin inputs. It looks like a card connector. A card edge plugs in. My external case has a female connectors, of the pin type. Even weirder the connectors are not in line. |

What you simply need is an adapter from a laptop drive into a regular desktop drive. Thats it. I have used my laptop HD many times in my external USB case. Oh and by the way I have a Sarotech IDE ext. case. |

As redbird said. Ultra ATA is IDE. You need a cable that'll let you connect the devices. |

In light of the continued discussion then, change my post to "if you need SATA"! |

mindmetoo, are you sure there's not a converter stuck on your hard drive converting the male pins to the female card?
Does it look like this, perchance?

I believe that might be it. My HD interface is female, looks like you plug it into a card edge. |

If that's the case, it almost certainly screws/snaps/clicks/somethings off. Unless it has been glued on. |

I think the f'er is on for good. Your picture tipped me off and I found this web site:
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-1035_11-5160538.html
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any screws or anything to snap off the adaptor. Maybe trip with the Korean speaking GF to the Compaq A/S desk to figure it out. Or just wait til I eventually go home. There's nothing 100% I need on that drive.
Thanks for the help. |
