Hello,
I've been noticing that many Korean job listings require a passport from an English-speaking country to teach English. Is that a Korean government requirement or just a specific school's requirement?
The problem is that I hold a passport from Mexico, even though I was raised in the U.S. my whole life. Am I basically screwed?
Thanks |

Yes.
Only holders of UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and USA passports may get visas to be English teachers in Korea.
Is it an inane government requirement, yes. However, it is an inflexible, no exceptions, iron clad law. |

| Are you a citizen of the US? If not can you apply for citizenship and then get a passport? |

| A backdoor quasi-illegal solution is to get a job teaching Spanish.(or another foreign language).....but then actually teach English. |

Damn, man. Ainchoo ever heard of no green card? Cut the brother some slack.
And yes, you are screwed. The Spanish/English teaching idea miiiight work, but Spanish teachers are few and far between here as far as I can see. |

| What if someone came to Korea and taught for several years under a USA passport, then changed his or her citizenship to another country. Would that person still be a Native English Speaker since they were already recognized as such????????? What about when an American or Canadian or Australian resides in Korea, marries a Korean and changes nationality to Korean. Is that person's status as a Native English Speaker suddenly taken away??????????????? |
