And if so, what do you think they're thinking about us? After all, there is so much negativity about Korea.
Interestingly, they never post a reply. Do you think that they don't care, or they wish they could post, but feel they don't have the language skills?
Has a Korean made a comment about this forum to you personally? What did they say?
A Korean friend of mine once told me that this forum was the most arrogant and ignorant forum he had ever come across. He couldn't understand why Westerners generally couldn't stand Korea while they (Koreans) just loved the West.
My response was, "You don't love the West; you just have a fetish about it".

Yes, they definately do.
Many would like to post, but getting an ID on here is somewhat of a challenge. It takes a few days, and Dave tends to be careful about who he lets in.
Some angry Koreans have gotten through, however their posts seem to be deleted quickly and the nickname disappears. If their posts are not hate-filled and inflammatory, they're more than welcome to stay.
Many Koreans/Gyopos read this site and just keep quiet. Some hagwon owners and Koreans who own other sites that cater to foreigners read this site as well. I know of at least four or five who do. Many schools scan this site when they hear a post badmouthing thier institution. I know Pagoda definately does (although that may be foreigners who work for Pagoda). One poster on here was threatened by Pagoda with legal action for posting a contract in a thread and asking people to comment on it.
Back in January when the netizens/bad foreign teacher / ES stories broke in the news, and I wrote a thread about it, there were several thousand views to that one thread in under an hour! Mithrades and I remember that well, because it felt like we were commenting on a radio station. I just kept hitting "refresh" on the Topics page to see how many views were adding up to the ES post every minute. It had been linked to on one or more Korean sites discussing the ES scandal.
The post stayed up for maybe 1 day, and got deleted. There were well over 20,000 views to that topic in just one day! I think the plug got pulled around 25,000. I watched it go from about 17,000 views to nearly 25,000 in about 1 or 2 hours before the plug was pulled. I remember that well, because it was early in the AM, and I was in the US on vacation. |

Interesting story. There are no postings by Koreans at all at this forum. That means, as you said, that the ones that are posted must all be hate filled to the rim. I would love to see a few of them. I bet they would ensue a war never seen before.
My question is: why not subtly attack? It really doesn't have to be explicit bombardment. A few smart bombs will do the trick. Again, I guess Koreans just don't have the language skills.
My follow-up questions are: Does this forum make EFL teachers' lives more difficult in Korea? I was there a few years ago and did not experience anything negative. What about now? |

Over the years there have been Koreans and Gyopos on the forum. At one time several of the class acts who inhabit this space told them to leave because this place is for 'us' and not 'them'. A few hate-filled attacks on them and they left. Things like: When you learn to speak English, come back. Or my personal favorite: I spend all day listening to Konglish. I don't want to have to read it, too.
My impression is that a lot fewer Koreans read this forum than some way-gook-ins like to think. In my opinion, we are a lot lower on the radar screen than many think. |

I sometimes mention this forum(though not by name) to my students, and the impression I get is that they have no idea that such forums even exist.
That might have changed a bit with the controversies a few months back, but even then I doubt there's been a huge surge of Koreans interested in ESL forums. |

I suppose you're right. If you're always under attack and you can't defend yourself because of a language barrier, you might as well ignore the whole thing. I gotta admit I've made fun of Koreans a number of times. (This is not an apology).
I think if would be interesting to get Korean opinion.
What if we invited them through a new thread called IF YOU'RE A KOREAN, VENT HERE FREELY? |

I'd like to see a forum where our Korean partners could chat in Korean. My wife took a look in a few times and and just laughed and walked away. I saw her point. |

Yeah, that was fun! I thought it went over 42000 before it got pulled though. The cafe that must not be named has a total of 15 hits so far today, so they've definately petered out. |

Yes, where could one find a forum like that, I wonder? |

Just had a look at the mithridates site. Couldn't understand it. In a strange language. |

You can change that, just click on English when registering and things will be back to normal when you sign in.
Koreans don't like php that much so I set it to Korean at first. |

I think the best time to get a handle on Korean opinion of things is when I'm out with one or two of my friends for dinner/drinks. They have a lot to say about lots of topics. |
