|

Hello all
I'm not entering this under the Travel board as I'm thinking of living in Las Vegas for a few years, not as a tourist but as a grad student at the university (UNLV).
Has anyone lived there or attended the university? Any recommendations or warnings?
Thanks, Ken:> |

I've spent a few months there one month at a time at my girlfriend's apartment the last couple of years.
I know that area around UNLV.. not too far away is the Las Vegas Public Library where I spent a lot of my free time.
For recommendations.. absolutely get a car. Waiting for public transportation is completely possible and acceptable (I did all the time there).. but because drinking open alcohol isn't against the law.. and just lots of homeless vagrancy around.. it just meant that 2 times out of 3.. I always had some guy waiting for the bus who was half off his rocker getting drunk and avoiding being in the hot, dry sun.
A car would alleviate all of that.. plus Las Vegas is very car-oriented.. its tough dashing across those streets - so large and wide (not talking the Strip itself.. but just all the streets).
On the plus side.. Las Vegas is fairly small enough to get around easily.. the airport is very close to UNLV as well. One of the big things I liked about Las Vegas in general.. is most of the housing is very new.. and lots of palm trees are everywhere.. plus the variety of food and restaurants is enormous..
Regarding the university.. never heard of any warnings.. I think its pretty much 'the' school to go to in Nevada. |

And you can come over for thanksgiving if you're alone on holiday. We always have an extra place at the table for an ex-esl teacher. Save all your freaky waegook stories!! |

I actually graduated from UNLV, and lived in Las Vegas for 11 years. True, a car is absolutely necessary there. Campus life is quite boring there, though. Mainly because the Strip is very close by. Outside of drinking and gambling, the only things to really do are hiking and golfing (if you're into that sort of thing). There aren't really any warnings outside of it getting very hot during the summer. As in getting up to 120F or 50C whichever you use. It's warmer in the Henderson area, but it's actually a nicer area. If you have any more specific questions, PM me, and I'll be happy to answer them for you. |

one of my best friends is at UNLV doing an MA. if i recall, the uni itself is pretty close to the city centre, walking distance. and yes, the airport is so near downtown planes fly really low overhead when landing, which is cool but a little noisy.
i'm not a fan of Vegas however. i absolutely LOVE the CHEAP helicopter flights to the Grand canyon but Vegas simply doesn't have much interesting stuff. i know this sounds silly but casinos is all that's there. other than the strip joints - where you'll blow a ton of $$$ - i thought vegas was rather boring. |

I love the desert archicture.. and all the new housing. This city keeps growing and growing. So many balconies on most of the apartments. Real nice. Anywhere with palm trees is automatically good in my book!
I'm back in Las Vegas again this week. |

OK, whoever said UNLV is "the" university, then tell me why there is no doctorate program? UNR is older, better academically, and Reno has Lake Tahoe, mountains, a river, nightlife and it's not 120F in the summer.
I was born in Vegas, but am UNR alum. I like Reno and my school much better. |

No doctorate program at UNLV? That's what I'm registered for, the English Lit PhD!
No strike against Reno; I just wasn't accepted there. I will check it out when I'm there.
