Burton and Depp surpass high expectations.

I miss Gene Wilder, but there's no doubt that Depp's freakier, darker, frightened Wonka is a mesmerizing character.

Burton has added scenes not found in either the original nor the book, so even if you've read the book and seen the original upteen times (I can't be the only one who has done this book with students) you're still in for a treat.

And the oompa loompas.....

I've read a few critics say that Depp dropped the ball on this one and that his character is eerily analogous to Wacko Jacko.

J. Depp still looks so damn good! Great actor too....with Burton and Depp together, you can't go wrong!

Ebert and Roper didn't like Johnny Depp either but liked the movie in general. I do want to see it though.. i loved that book and movie as a child.. I wonder how well it will go overe here?

I was bad and watched a bad bit torrent of it. It is really worth watching and is another bright spot in a great Summer Movie Summer.

What annoyed me was how Burton was dissing the 1970s version, saying he wanted to be true to the book. Yet he still made MAJOR additions to the book, and many of the exact same lines are in both movies. It feels more like an update of the 1970s movie than a back-to-the-book film. Burton also criticised the Gene Wilder version for being a musical, yet there are musical numbers in this one -- and none as memorable and eerie as "Pure Imagination."

The sequences before they enter the factory are fabulous. Nonetheless, the original movie did a better job of fleshing out the four bad kids. In the original, Veruca was a vile, vile, vicious brat. Here, she's kind of an adorable British child who gets what she wants for just asking sweetly or matter of factly -- not stamping her feet and screaming like the 1970 Veruca. And Violet Beauregard is a pretty cool kick ass kid. Augustus is funny and clumsy. Mike Teevee is the only kid that you really want to give a good kick in the pants.

Roald Dahl hated the original because they did turn it into a musical, and they played with the script he wrote. You can clearly see now where they rewrote the script in the original movie. And really, the script in the original comes across as wittier, with all its Shakespeare quips and wisecracks at the kids.

Gene Wilder: "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dreams."

Johnny Depp: "Chewing gum is really gross. Chewing gum I hate the most."

Gene Wilder (answering a question from Mr. Salt): "I'm sorry, but all questions are to be submitted in writing."

Johnny Depp (answering a question from Mr. Salt): "You're really weird."

And honestly, I still tear up when Gene Wilder says the last line in the original: "And Charlie, remember what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he ever wanted... He lived happily ever after."

Nonetheless, the Johnny Depp version is a classic, and I love it.

I always feel like Tim Burton movies look like they are made in the same cookie-cutter fantasy world that is just repainted a different shade of gray every time.

Hopefully, this will be different, and they didn't just add lots of bright colors to the same old props.

he said on leno he use gameshow hosts and childrens tv show host personalities to come up with this weird character of wonka!

I loved the original version of the movie and the Burton/Depp team never fail to disappoint! Remember Edward Scissorhands? Why does my avatar only show up as an x?

The origional is also one of my favorite movies. There's no way I'm going to watch the remake. There is only on Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and it was made in the year I was born.

Depp is brilliant. Anyone who can do a movie like "The Brave" deserves a lifelong achievement award.

I can't wait to see this one.
