I'm using a DVD burner for the first time - it came automatically installed on my computer - Nero. I just tried to burn a television program that I downloaded. I burned it as episodes of the program - the usual, I think, starting with the first half of the season on one disc, and then i was going to burn the second half on another.

It seemed to go fine, but then conked out during the verifying data process. It said there was a problem with most of the files, something about two corrupted and one skipped.

I've never done this before, so I wasn't sure if the disc was really ruined or not. So I decided to check it out. I opened it in Windows Media Player, and all of the episodes had burned, but they all had these funny kind of geometric squiggles here and there in the picture. I could watch it, but it wasn't the quality that I had in the original download, which was virtually perfect.

So I decided to burn it again on a fresh disc and deal with this failed disc some other time. But when I went to do that, I discovered that the first two files had disappeared!

So, my questions are these: Is it usually that burned copies of things are kind of crappy? Is it the Nero program? Is it the quality of disc that I bought? And, when you burn something, does it disappear from your computer automatically? I now have no good copy of the first two files from that series!!!!

Sad

Thanks.

Okay. I just tried it again. I did two things differently: I chose to write a multisessional DVD, which the first time I didn't do - why? I dunno. Anyway, I also updated Nero as per the DVD writer thread below. I don't know which worked, but this one was fine. I'd love to know which one it was. My program says that a multisession DVD may not be readable on computers before WinXP, so I thought that if I lent it to friends, they might not be able to read it. Anyway, problem pretty much solved!

So I've been burning stuff, and some of it ended up with those "geometric squiggles" that I was talking about. This time I made sure to save the original files on my computer. So I tried them too, and they also had the squiggles - but hadn't had before I tried to burn them. I then tried the files that were still saved on my computer in VLC media player, and they were fine. Any suggestions suggestions as to what is going on with my Windows Player?

Sorry to break the news to you, but Windows Media Player is probably what is wrong with Windows Media Player.
The files you have are encoded with some format that WMP doesn't deal with very well. As you've already noted, VLC plays them fine.
I would forget about using WMP for these files, unless you want to download and install a codec pack. I wouldn't recommend doing that though because some of those packs are pretty buggy in themselves.
Just use VLC.

WMP is a bloated pile of crap.

I avoid it whenever possible.

You're not the only one with problems.

I too was having problems with Nero. Try updating it, as I haven't had any problems since updating it. Click on the "Nero product center" button and it will tell you the current version you have and if there is an update available.

I have another problem with Nero, I go to burn a program, files etc on to either a CD or DVD, Nero says the burn has been completed sucessfully so then I go to play or open the media and NOTHING IS THERE!!!! I go into my computer and click on explore for the cd/dvd and NOTHING IS ON THE CD/DVD!!!!

I have used many different cds/dvds and get the same.

When I burn programs using another program like Divxtodvd it works fine so the problem is with Nero.

Thanks, everyone. I've updated Nero and reconciled myself to using VLC from here on in. It didn't even occur to me that Windows Media Player might be the problem! It's a brand new computer! And it's Windows, for goodness sake! Is Bill Gates turning into the Ronald McDonald of computer software?

No, he became that a long time ago.
