Hi, I'm just wondering whether anyone runs a server 24/7 from home ...

I want to run a linux server from home, is there any ISP out there that is willing to provide a permanent IP address ?? ... I'd rather not have to mess around with the www.sitename.no-ip.com scenario...

Also how much does it cost to keep an intel machine running for a month ? (what is the KWh for one of those boxes ?).

Has anyone looked into the costs involved in a private server as opposed to a collocated server / web hosting ?

How much do you pay for webhosting ?

anyway thanks in advance ... Very Happy

if you search the tech forum you should find a post or two by Gord on Servers and at least one by Giant as well.

For hosting I use Site 5 and have been very satisfied so far.

The later the Intel P4 CPUs, the more power they suck and the hotter they get. The Pentium M CPUs, on the other hand, offer a lot of power at low power usage, and low heat waste. Slower, if viewed in terms of clock speed, but much more efficient.

How much power they suck depends on whether it's a P4, a Celeron, or a Pentium M, and how fast it is. Be aware that the other parts of the computer also consume power, so the efficiency of the power supply, amount of memory you have, the graphics card, how many hard drives, the monitor and even the motherboard type can change the power use. But the single major factor is the CPU, as you have identified.
Check www.tomshardware.com for recent articles on server power use.

I find it burns about 5,000 wons worth of electricty. But I dont have any HD's plugged in it.

Don't use it for hosting sites.

I run servers (irc, apache, ftp, and some others) from home on *nix boxes. Using some free dynamic dns service is the best way to go, in my opinion.
