Pat bing su season is here now.... this delicious shaved-ice combination dessert is appearing at bakeries and other places throughout Korea. What's the best tasting dish of it you've had? The most ostentatious? Any with unusual ingredients?
Also, does anyone know what kind of place sells the little hand-operated ice shavers. I see the candy, ddeok, azukis and other ingredients for sale in the supermarkets but not the devices to grate the ice. Is there a place that specializes in them?
I had some the other day - just a little bowl in Danyang (2500 won) - with NO dairy products. Instead they used pineapple juice. Very tasty, and good 'cause I try to avoid milk and such.... |

I've met many a teacher who can't stand pat bing bu. They just can't get over the beans. But I'm a lover!!!!
You can get the ice shavers at any department store and even at Home Plus and E-mart.
But then why bother, everywhere there's a Lotteria, just 2,500 won!!! |

Patbingsu is one of the biggest rip-offs in Korea. You pay too much for a bowl of shaved ice. Oh and there's a cherry on top and a few beans. Wow! What a deal. I do like the beans though.
For the same price you can get an actual sundae back home. I'm suddenly missing Dairy Queen, but sure the hell not patbingsu. |

This might sound a little strange, but I quite like the burger king attempt at it. Not bad at all.
A friend suggested it to me ages ago, scoffed at him, tried it, and then paid my respects! |

It's not just beans and ice. There is also ddeok, fruit, candy, some kind of strawberry sauce, and ice cream!!!!
Do you mix yours up or do you just pick at it?

Corn does not belong on pizza; beans do not belong on ice. It is just morally wrong. |

There's a lot of corn on this forum ... Actually, aren't vanilla and maybe even chocolate derived from beans? What about coffee ice cream? And "Tofuti"? (Well, I'm not sure I like Tofuti...) |

(raises hand)
My wife had one at Home Plus today. Even though it had pieces of kiwi, banana, and other such fruit, I just don't understand the attraction. As I told my wife: "Take out the ice and replace it with ice cream - any flavour. Then replace that awful bean pasty stuff with caramel or chocolate syrup. Whaddaya think?"
She reluctantly confessed my suggestion (a sundae, I'm not re-inventing the wheel here) sounded better. |

Silly Koreans and their preference for non-fatty, low-calorie desserts. Don't you worry, amigo; we've got our chubby little claws in them deep, and pretty soon they'll all be eating hamdogs.
