A friend gave me a laptop and I checked it out (actually, the guy at Yongsan did). Apparently it has a fucked up video chip so the mother board should be replaced.

It's a Gateway 1450 and I was looking up mother boards on ebay and they run around 130~150 dollars (plus shipping). If you're a laptop techie and you want it, it's yours. Alternatively, if you're going back to Canada you could bring it in for servicing.
