Hi,

I need some advice on a VISA on arrival issue. I am coming over to Korea one month from now and have already booked my *single* plane ticket about six weeks ago.

I know that if, like myself, you hold a UK passport, then you are allowed up to three months stay in South Korea by obtaining a VISA on arrival at Incheon Airport.

But what I want to know is this: I have heard that if you don't have either a return ticket or proof of onward journey out of Korea, then you can be refused entry to Korea.

Is this true and should I be worried?

If you don't have proof of onward travel, you are not allowed in country on a tourist visa. The enforcement of this policy is hit/miss and when it happens, its usually at the airline check-in. If you have no intention to buy onward travel, then be prepared to bring a good excuse and hope it works, in the event that you don't get a rookie clerk. If they refuse to let you board and you need a cheap ticket, email a company like www.kangsantravel.com , and purchase an open-ended, one-way ferry ticket to Japan for 60,000Won, and have them fax you the receipt and use it for proof of onward travel. Personally, it'd wise to do this beforehand, so you don't have to risk the hassle of missing and rescheduling a flight over a refused boarding.

It is true, but enforcement is another story. Personally, I've flown into korea w/out a visa on a one-way and had no problem.

It depends on the airline....

If you are flying British Airways then they WILL enforce this law...they are one of the worst airlines in the world at enforcing this law....it can be hit/miss but don't bet on it......

Just get a refundable ticket and cash it in when you get here....

I have been hit up everytime I have come(from australia) in but in North America it seems to be a lot more relaxed

I flew from London Heathrow with Lufthansa on a one way ticket with no visa. I flirted with the checkin girl too and she didn't charge me extra even though my bags were 15kg overweight. I tried that on the way back but it didn't work though. I paid 230,000 won in excesss baggage.. and that was AFTER a 5kg discount.

Funny you should say that. My ticket is actually the exact same one. It is booked with Lufthansa and is via Frankfurt.

Although it would be wise to sort out an onward ticket to Japan (any sort would do), I think that I'm going to chance it and not buy one. My logic is that I will be bringing a fair amount of money over in Travellers Cheques and this financial security should be enough to persuade any doubters.
