I just reinstalled all of my windows AGAIN today because part of my XP corrupted. (Don't watch video in an applet while running DVD Shrink)! I froze up and had to reboot -- BANG. IE fonts were messed up and unfixable through any menu, and the Windows repair disc didn't fix the errors, although it found them. Also, Messenger and Outlook didn't look right. My scanner quit working, and uninstalling/reinstalling software wouldn't help. Time for a new install of Windows.
Anyway all, is right with the world now, but I want some sort of system restore software for if it happens again. I used to use Gateway Goback until it conflicted with something several years ago. Any suggestions? I'd like some kind of software that will revert me to a certain point in time on the drive.

Ok, did that... think that'll work if my Windows files become corrupted?
If that's all it takes, why bother buying a program for that? |

Actually, its well known that some graphics cards can't do that...same when capturing, isn't it Derrek? Some cards just don't like to preview the capture, so there is often the option not to do it.
Just wondering because you do a lot of video work. |

You mean check the 'preview box' on DVD shrink while it's running? Or watching something on a program like VLC or WMP while Shrink is running? I've done both without any problems...

Oh, you got confused by my short sentence.
I was actually running DVD Shrink (I always click the video window off, because it adds strain/heat on my graphics card). The video window I was referring to was a separate window , where I was watching a news feed. Totally different program. I wasn't capturing. Whenever I've used Adobe Premiere, though, I've always been able to view the capture (even on an old PIII 500mhz machine with a 16meg video card), so you lost me on that one?? |

Derrek, what's up with you and heat issues with your graphics card? What do you have.... A pixel sweatshop in your comp!?
What kind of card is it and why do you have to babysit it so much? Man....any graphics card that gets strained by showing a video preview in a 2-inch window gets put into the dustbin....or heck...never made!
Anyways, it wasn't your short sentence that confused me....it was something else.
As for losing you....well....a few programs I can think of give the option to disable the preview and an accompanying warning stating why the option exists. I too have never had an issue with this, through the whole run of graphics cards over the years, but the warning is there, so I assume someone, somewhere, sometime had a problem.
Just like the "Do not eat" warning on silica packets. Who in their right mind would eat it? Well....someone did at least once, so.... |

Demo, you're really trying hard to be a smart-ass. 
I've got a GeForce TI4200 with one dead fan (out of 2). Haven't gotten around to hunting all over tarnation at Youngsan for the exact right fan, so I've got a slot fan sucking air right up next to it for the past 6 months. Not the best solution, but it helps. I virtually never play games, and watching movies is fine with this cobbled-up cooling solution. I probably won't bother getting a fan for it, since it's loud as heck with two fans anyway, and if it dies, then fine. I'll buy a newer, more quiet card with DVI out. I've learned I have little need for a powerful card.
That's why there are heat issues. |

| I believe what you want is Nortons Ghost. It will save your installation state into an image or mirror it onto another drive. |

There are many apps to let you restore partial or full system backups. Norton Ghost 9 is the best I've seen. I installed Xp and my most comonly used apps etc, then backed up the drive/partion with Ghost on to dvds. You can choose the compression you want. Then when the system f...ed up I formated the HD, put in the Ghost disk (it's bootable), and Ghost put everything back right where it was apps,music,drivers and all. So my pc was back to running nice and fast.
I really was great not having to re-enter serials and all that crap.
I like Ghost 9 because I use external devices (HD and DVDr) and 9 recogognizes them from boot even when windows is fried. So I can recover data. The previous vr. would back up fine to extenal burners but the burner wasnt supported by the Emer. Recover Disk. |

You know, it's very easy to buy a little low-amp fan and whack it on there....some twist ties or whatever to hold it in place.

Nope, I returned from my vacation back home. I am now back in the land of higher-priced top-end graphics cards. |
