Funny, I was just reading about Russian culture and the old women named 'Bubushkas'.. funny to read about their agressiv nature fighting for seats on the buses and the like.. haha.. sounds similar to Korean adjummas! I've seen adjummas throw the bags right off their backs 20 feat slamming into a seat they are claiming! Funny stuff.

Quote:
The old ladies are very noticeable in Russia, they're called 'Babushkas'.
You can't come to Russia without meeting them, as they seem to spend their days outside. They join together for a chat on the benches in

front of their homes, or they walk their dog in the parks. Because they are in every public place, they contribute to making the cities feel safe, even in the evening.
In the West, the grannies are often seen as feeble and afraid of crossing the street alone, or getting stolen their handbag. In Russia, Babushkas manage by themselves and make themselves respected. They often tell people off in the metro, fight their way to get a seat in a crowded bus, pass in front of the others in the lines at the bank.
They grew up during the hard times of the war and never miss a chance to remind people about that.

I wonder why the "west" has such a feeble impression of older ladies.

Actually, a "babushka" is a headscarf resembling a handkerchief. These women got the name because they usually wear them.

BTW, GOOD FOR THEM!! SOMEONE has to show these young whippersnappers that "old" doesn't mean "feeble"!! Cool

Old women have no place on this planet - I don't blame them for feeling rejected and frustrated.

Having lived in Russia, I have a certain affinity for babushkas...they are really sweet ladies....all you have to do is smile and say "hello"....they'll give you their last potato Very Happy

they are not as aggressive as ajummas but can be pushy....and they are definately not as rude!! they have had a hard life, much harder than most Koreans have ever had (even the war vets) and so....

Babushkas will often ask if they can break in line....I have never, ever seen an ajumma do that

give me a babushka any day

That's the funniest part.

I wish more old women back home were a little more gruff. Some are, but most are not.
