just saw on KBS news about a high school student who jumped through the window of her Apt. building and killed herself.from what i can gather she only completed the 1st part of the exam and then got up and left the exam room.

nobody knows how many more will do the same in the days to follow!

I remember this time last year- same thing happened to a boy and 2 girls. Terrible.

I despise that test and the whole culture that has been built up around it (that is not Korean culture, that is test culture)

I honestly and sincerely hope that no more will follow suit.

What amazes me here is the national obssession with getting your kid into an Ivy league school in the US. The wealthier the parent, the deeper the psychosis.
It's sad when the whole point of your kid's life is "to go to Harvard." The industry that's sprung up around name-brand schools with the promise of getting a kid into them is phenomenal bucks here. Huge selling point that everyone uses on parents.
Whatever happened to educating a kid to be a well-rounded, balanced individual who's happy?

The sad thing is this happens every single year. I can well imagine it happens in America and other countries as well, but kids here from day one it seems are put into this pressure cooker environment. I wish the kids could see it doesn't matter what school you get into.
Of course some schools are at fault as well....they ONLY look at a person's test scores, ignoring GPA, and whether they worked or held any club activities. Too too sad.

IMO the sad part is the pressure put on what I consider "kids"

I teach at a highschool and participated in the "soo nung" cheering you see on TV. The pressure on these kids is immense. I can't think of much in my life that had that kind of pressure...marriage comes close, but I was ready for that after popping the question.

Not all parents drive their kids to "ivy league" type institutions, but the "system" in Korea drives students to compete on some unreal levels.

Most humans are equipped with sympathy for the student's family, which allows us to feel sorry for those less fortunate than ourselves, troll.
Some of us may even feel a sense of empathy for strung-out high school students in general, as they knew someone in high school who took his or her life because of a college rejection letter/bad SAT score.

18. what an age to be...ahh, the memories! such a tumultuous time, so many questions, raw emotions and life. I'm glad that i survived it. I reckon its one of the most vulnerable times in a persons life. Just think of a chick fledging from its nest finally, and having to make its first leap off the cliff and fly for the first time...thats 18. Helluva time...
