I'm tired of this place, its pretty old already. I'm just really burnt on it.
I can go back to my life but I want to try one thing yet. I'm really tired of the "pretty please can I have a job mister?" groveling so I want to own a business. I'd like to try a school in the Philipines. I can match the tuition $400-600 per week per student but I wonder how far that native speaker business will float the Koreans in Pinoy. Yes, I'd be teaching Koreans. |

I asked this before over on Shawner's "Beijing" thread but haven't seen any answers. Are there good-paying ESL jobs in Asia that don't involve teaching Koreans? (Koreans in Korea, Koreans in China, Koreans in the Philippines, etc.) I mean besides Taiwan and Japan. Oh, and 400 well-paid ESL teachers in Hong Kong doesn't count. HK's a pimple, not a proper market, is it?
My follow-up questions are:
Thank God for the Koreans, huh?
Assuming you made about the same (after tax, after living expenses, etc.) would you rather teach Koreans in Korea or Koreans in other countries? Why? |

If I were committed to EFL for life, and if I were determined to teach in Asia, my answer would have to be "yes."
I can't answer your second question. Have no intention of finding out, either. |

I'm almost expecting English to fall out of fashion in Korea as an almost instantaneous event. In the period of like one year, just about everyone without an immediate need for English will stop studying. One year later it will be as if the English mania never existed. |

If you have the seed money, Japan (esp. greater Osaka or Fukuoka areas) and Singapore are both reasonable alternatives. You seem to have snap about you already; if your credentials match, you could be set for either of those.
Unless, of course, you are referring to the lucrative 'income v. CoL,' which is completely different.
8 years in, and i am considering my options, as well. Think I may buy a house in Costa Rica and live there 1-2 before retiring in 'nam.

Sounds interesting Dulouz- what exactly do you plan to do?
rent a cheap building and start your own place? don't you need to be married to a phillipino to own a business? fill me in.
-yeah- i got pretty tired of the huge competition for a good job in the west too. |

What am I gonna do?
What am I gonna do?
I have options but I have more daydreams. I'm retired, I don't have to work ever again but its not much. I can do well in Brazil and the like. I'd like a big hydrofarm in Brazil. That'd be cool.
I have some savings, I can take off for a year. I'd like to look into the school thing. I ran those numbers in my head all weekend ... 30 students times $400 a month = $$$$ but I don't think its gonna be like that but maybe just long enough for a $100,000 nest egg.
More realistically I think I will float to Taiwan for a few months, then to Vietnam and then perhaps to my ancestral home of Poland-Germany while I try to get back into this mess....
I have a real strong daydream about being a farming or animal raiser. Perhaps exotic cats or shrimp. I'd like an Amesterdam cafe I think. I have an offshore medical billing business in my head that I'd like to market or at least test market. If I can get into the peace corps, I can maybe get an ag spot and then use the hiring preference to get a state department job where I'd have only ten years to retirement. I have to make babies yet too.
This is what I have to look forward to. Its not pretty but its steady.

Medical Administration Service
RELOCATION EXPENSES ARE NOT AUTHORIZED.
DUTIES INCLUDE: Under the direction of the Chief, HIMS, the incumbent serves as aprimary source to Medical Administration Service (MAS) and all clinical services/selections for Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) and other patient grouping management. Supervises the Coding Unit staffed by Medical Records Technicians. The incumbent extracts and presents pertinent data to appropriate clinical staff and management, in both narrative and graphical format on a recurring basis, and presents techniques, procedures, and processes for correction of areas of inefficiency. Makes final determinations on the use and submission of ICD-9-CM codes used to record new diagnostic terms, treatments, drugs, procedures, and therapies for which no reference of precedent is available. Maintain liaison with medical record departments in other area health care providers in order to facilitate the administration of the local medical records program. The incumbent provides technical assistance, training, and advice to all medical center and satellite clinic personnel concerning policy and procedures related to coding and health record docementation requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be citizens of the United States. At the GS-11
level, you must have had one year of specialized experience at the GS-9 level. This specialized experience must have provided you with an extensive knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCS coding and medical record procedures and techniques. RHIA or RHIT, plus CCS, CPC preferred. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Planning, developing, and directing a medical records program for a health care facility that meets both institutional goals and standards of accrediting agencies; Evaluating and analyzing the organization and operation of medical records services including medical records and indexes and recommending/implementing appropriate revisions and modifications; Designing information systems to
collect, analyze, monitor, report, and maintain privacy and confidentiality of patient and institutional data for health care related programs, and
evaluating/implementing changes to assure the reliability of data. . Substitution of education for specialized experience: A doctoral degree or three years of progressively higher level graduate education in the medical records administration field leading to such a degree is fully qualifying at the GS-11 level. If using college to qualify for this position, transcripts must be submitted with your application as well as any certifications or licensures.
Time-In-Grade requirements must be met.
