My honest opinion is that Korea is Korea. The cities are all remarkably similar. Busan has the beach and Seoul has a bit more cosmopolitan influence. Other that that.... six and two threes.
Take a train to any city in Korea and you'll be hard pushed to tell you haven't just gone 5 subway stops on the green line. |

You sound like you ONLY have gone five stops on the green line!
There's a BIG difference between cities in Korea. I am happy where I am and know of several other cities I'd be happy in, as well as several I'd be miserable in.
Yes there's a lot of similarity but in terms of what a city offers for an expat, there's a HUGE difference between cities, spoken as someone who has travelled to alot of South Korean cities in eight of the nine provinces.
In terms of restaurants, if you want more options than Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Western chicken and hamburger, then go to PARTS of Seoul, Busan or even Geoje, where because of local international shipbuilding companies, this small city has Pakistani (and Indian), French (plus Italian, the chef is Swiss), German (faux, but the sausages taste great), Vietnamese, as well as supermarket supplies of sour cream, cheddar, t-bone steak and more.
If you want clean air, then don't go to Pohang, Ulsan, Seoul but instead try smaller cities in the southernmost areas. Not Masan though. That city's got industrial pollutants pumped daily, locals who gawk at foreigners MORE than in several other cities, probably because even I rarely have seen a foreigner there, and have found it to be the most miserable looking mid-sized city in Korea.
There are other factors that are different. You get the point.
Among differences between the two biggest cities, Busan is much warmer in winter than Seoul, though the cold winds off of the ocean make the +2 C days feel colder. Still, little to any snow, and it melts right away. Very different than Seoul.
In Busan and in Seoul, PARTS of the two cities are VERY NICE and parts aren't. The two cities are big enough that it makes a difference, unless you want to spend an hour a day commuting via subway (uggh). Live in Haeundae or near Nampodong and you'll be happy enough in Busan.
My advice, be careful about the location within a major city, given distances between parts of a city.
Figure out what sorts of factors are important to YOU and then look accordingly.
If you want general comparisons of the features of both cities then use the "search" function at the top of page and explore the MANY threads about Seoul vs. Busan we have created and contributed to over the last year alone on the subject. It really has been discussed to death. |

I lived in both cities - Seoul & Busan.
Busan is better for all things outdoors (close proximity to mountains and oceans).. well the city is sandwiched between the two.
Also climate-wise.. Busan is cooler in the summer than Seoul.. and in the winter, its warmer in the winter.
For everything else, Seoul was a lot better. The people of Seoul are a lot more international in thinking and such.. in Busan, they are very provincial in thinking. Busan also has a lot more regional and national pride and extremely traditional in thinking (from my experiences).
The best of both worlds would be to move all the people of Seoul into the location of Busan.
Of the two, I've chosen Seoul.. |

Please, no. Enough people here already. As you know, Seoul is the only place for Koreans to find opportunities. I'm hoping a couple of more million Busaners will move to Seoul and become rich Seoulites. All the more space for me here. |
