Can anyone recommend some slightly populated Korean (though with accomodations) islands to visit during my upcoming summer vacation (3 weeks)? Thanks.

I've done them both, just having come back from Bogildo on Monday. I recommend them too, but not for this guy!
At those places the lines and crowds were huge!
The op wants "slightly populated", not overburgeoned with Korean tourist boats, doesn't he? |

When I went in June last year both the islands were deserted...i was the only person on the boat to Bogildo...I went during the week(Sunday - Saturday) so that might have something to do with it. |

It has nothing to do with day of the week and everything to do with tourist vs. non-tourist season.
I went this Sunday and when I returned by ferry on Monday the line-up at the Wando ferry terminal for Monday travel to Bogildo was enormous! Very long.
Late July and throughout August are Korean vacation times. So, if the op is travelling this month, expect crowds at Bogildo, despite the rain!
I went to Hongdo on a Thursday in July of 2003 and the ferry was full, another ferry returning was full, one had to wait in long lines just to use the restrooms in the hustle and bustle of the small restaurant district on the island. It was nice and festive, but very crowded, in fact, the most crowded place I've ever been, more than the Seoul subway in feel.
There must be a dramatic drop in travel among Koreans during the off-season (June isn't the tourist season for Koreans).
The op wants to travel in August, Korean tourist season, so stay away from Bogildo and Hongdo unless you like crowds. |
