Actually back from Korea now but have an interview for a job where I will work in schools. Have to give a 10 minute presentation on 'The methods you would use to keep the interest when presenting to a group of children' i.e. visual aids. Looking for all the help I can get. Let me know if you have any cool ideas in particular. I'm thinking back on my children teaching days but I was always better at teaching adults but need to impress on this obviously. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks |

ESL, EFL, or just elementary? What ideas do you already have? Some basic objectives might be to:
have a fun, energizing warm up
use lots of movement
change gears every ten to fifteen minutes
visuals (particularly if a language class)
very general guideline: teach, practice, apply
group/pair work
have a product at the end, i.e., something they will do or produce
Hard to say much without more direction from you in terms of age, type of class(es), length of class, length of course..... etc.
Good luck! |

Hello, Phil in Korea!
Here is what I did for a demonstration lesson which landed me a job in Cheongju:
learn the names of the class members
I made sure that I knew the names of every person in the room.
In sign language, I said, "His name is Jim." "Jim is next to Susan."
read What Time is it Now?
This is a Korean picture book which I always read before reading any other picture book.
My translation reads:
What time is it now?
Is it time to dance?
Is it time to swim?
Is it time to sing?
Is it time to swing?
No, it's time to read a book.
If you have trouble finding this book, I could run all the pictures through the scanner.
 read another picture book
Next I read another Korean picture book. This one said, "Dogs go bow bow, cats go meow."
After reading the book, I turned back to the picture of a cat.
While slapping my knees, I said rhythmically, "This is a cat, this is a cat."
Then, in sign language, I said, "This is a cat."
Then, we all repeated "This is a cat" is a loud, soft, high, and low voice.
 spell the word
I keep a set of letters which I made from tiles which I made from tiles which were being discarded at a construction site. I spelled the word CAT and asked for volunteers to do likewise.
I spelled the word CAT, then fingerspelled it, then asked for volunteers to do likewise.
 spell the word in Braille
Next, I spelled the word in Braille. For this activity, I use an apparatus consisting of:
--a small flannelboard consisting of 6 conterminous white flannel squares mounted on the front of a cornflake box
--6 black flannel circle
I demonstrated each letter and asked for volunteers to do likewise.
 sing a song
I played this song and asked for volunteers to play it on the xylophone:
 say goodby
Finally, I asked for volunteers to play "goodby" on the xylophone:
I hope this helps. |
