So, took a bunch of kids to an outdoor party today and came home with a sunburn that's going to make getting dressed tomorrow fun (not). Anybody know whether aloe gel or something similar is available at the pharmacy and, if so, what it's called? Yeah, I know I can buy an aloe plant if I have to, but they're fairly expensive, and pharmacies outnumber flower shops at least 5 to 1 around here.

You don't have to buy the whole plant; your supermarket should sell the individual aloe leaves, fronds, whatever they're called. We just bought one, about a foot long for like 1600 won, so that's less than any pharmacy-bought gel would cost you. My husband had pretty bad sunburn on his legs, so I sliced up the aloe in inch thick pieces and applied it directly to the skin. It worked well.

Aparently cucumber works as well.

I got burned yesterday, and happened to have some "9-5 Cooling Gel" lying around (they were free samples) which contain aloe vera, and may be for your face, but I used them on my arms, legs and face.... worked a charm!

I looked for some yesterday but the pharmacy didn't have any. He gave the impression that aloe wasn't that effective for burns. Instead he sold me the cream for fire burns.

I want to get some aloe too. I ran out of the stuff I bought in Thailand.

I believe that you can get aloe gel at the Body Shop

I could be wrong but I seem to recall seeing some there.

Aloe can be used for a whole bunch of things! Burns is what Ive seen it used for most though...

A good way to render an aloe plant section that'll make the most out of the cellulose/gel inside is to slice the skin down the middle, peel the skin back on each side of the cut so the skin lays flat, and then use a finely serrated knife to scrape/pulp the cellulose/gel. It turns into the consistency of egg-white but it's easier to apply evenly. Refrigerated, the stuff is awesome for sunburns.
