|
|
Hi,
I'm coming over to SK at the end of this month and am looking to land an average 1.9 - 2.1 job. I've worked out in Thailand for one year, so i'm not brand new to EFL teaching.
My question is this: I have the necessary degree and TEFL, I'm coming over to SK using my own money to pay for the airfare, but don't necessarily want to commit to a full one-year contract.
What are the chances of getting a decent six-month contract with the same terms and conditions as a one-year contract?
I'm slightly scared by what others have said and don't really know if SK is for me or not. I want half a year to decide and don't want to sign a whole year away.
Can anyone advise? |

For starters if your not fussed about the airfare or severance then it doesnt matter about getting a 12 month contract and simply handing in your notice at 5 months. They might even pay for your flight in at the 6month period.
Korea isnt bad and its easy to get disillusioned here. Sure u get irritated every now and then but that is the nature of the game we play.
Finally when it comes to a shit job here ur in a really nice position at the moment. With ur flexibility on airfares there you will NOT have any problem with getting a good job. A combination of increasing popularity of school jobs and immi crackdown means there are WAY to many vacancies at the mo, the second ur getting a bum deal, walk.
Personally I reccommend a school job, decent pay, long holidays and its a lot of fun, provided u can control 40+ kids. The only problem i forsee with that route is that if you walk on them ur gonna make the school and the kids pick up an anti foreigner vibe which will be harsh for your replacement.
Just go for it, and dont be put off by the naysayers here! |

Yea, your best bet is to come in on a long-term contract and leave at the 6-month mark, on the up and up. You probably won't get severance, pension, reimbursed airfare, so on, but yea. It's a 6-month contract.
Otherwise, just try talking to schools about your intentions. |

It'll be easier to get a 6 month gig in country.
You'll probably forgo airfare etc, and they may try and screw you out of a bit on your last month for the cost of visa run etc, but it'll vary from school to school. 12 months is definitely the norm, but it depends on how desperate they are, how badly they want you etc. as to whether they'll come around to what you want.
Failing that I agree, sign the one year and then give notice and prepare to get shafted a little on your last month. |
