How big is "big"? I've seen a couple that could hide a 500 Won coin, but nothing that needs a collar and leash.

p.s. nice pic Tzechuk, is she really growing that fast?

In my home town of Miami, Fla. the bugs are not only big, but fight for their turf; coming home once, I walked into my bedroom and one flew, yes, I said flew at me.
Basically, it was a palmetto bug, which is a roach with wings.

Last month in one of my classes a student had a big beetle with massive mandibals. I thought how cute a plastic bug to scare the girls with. So I picked it up Shocked Very docile little bug but about an inch and a half long. Jet black, shiny shell, pretty cool overall.

Was this it, Grotto?

罿 Serrognathus platymelus castanicolor

My wife was just a wee bit uncomfortable for this shot. It didn't help that the beetle wouldn't stop moving, so it took a while for me to get a picture in focus.

There are a couple more photos of them on my blog, if anyone is interested: http://gdimension.typepad.com/

That's a wicked photo- I had to look at it for a minute before I realized that it wasn't a painting or an animation cell.

I've seen those same beetles sold at GS Mart in little plastic containers (quite inhumane really). Are they native to Korea? What I mean is would you see one if you were hiking in the mountains here? I think they're pretty damn cool myself.

That thing'll squeeze your finger 'til the tip of the mandible pokes through your skin. I had one on my finger like that 'til I whacked it on the head and it let go.

They've got a whole big cage full of those things at a pet store near here. They feed 'em little containers of jelly, and they eat 'em like crack.

Thanks. That was at Bunjae Artpia on Jeju.

According to my sources, which are never wrong (cough, cough), nonnative beetles are not allowed in Korea, so those, and all others that you see, can be found here. The ones in my pictures in particular can be found here on Jeju, and I assume the mainland, near fruit trees at night (hence the fact that they go bonkers over that jelly that Derrek referred to).
