So, I went to this job interview on Thursday at 3 o'clock. The lady couldnt wait to give me the job. Its only part time, and actually like 8 hours a week. Not really what Im looking for. And the pay is comparitively low. She gave me the "think of the kids" speech I tried not to laugh. Anyways, I said I would think about it. I had it all set up to bow out, by saying I have more interviews. She then goes on to say that this saturday there is an open house of sorts, promoting their program. And they need me to go. I Hoooo'd and Hummed and said, we will see how the other interviews go. Anyways, by the end of the whole thing she was like, oh it is so great to have you as part of the team and such. I hate being an asshole, so......

I called today, to say I found another job. ANd she gives me the... well you are still coming on Saturday right....... Im stunned. Not sure what to say, thought that would be obvious. She says "we can talk about the conditions as well" but considering the hourly rate was about 30% lower than I need, then.......probably not gonna happen.

She gives me the"my boss will fire me" and the" you said you would come".......Im like, uhh Ill call you back.....

I really want to just ignore it, and not go. I would feel guilty.

The other part of me is saying, they just want you to go so they dont look like jack assess, and they are in a tough spot. They would take any tom dick or harry to be there....

They're playing you. Turn off your phone until at least Sunday night.

I've no experiece with Korean negotiations but if the situation arose at home i'd say i'll come for £X or $X and name a price. If they need you that badly they'll pay, if not: they didn't need you badly enough...

Appealling to your good nature and her bad boss really isn't good practise and would make me a bit suspicious but, hey, i'm a sucker for a sob story too so i'd probably end up helping her out for the price of a few beers.

thing is, sounds like an awkward song and dance in front of some parents.....blah blah blah blah blah........ now here is the foreigner to talk about this place that he knows nothing about......DANCE WHITE MONKEY>>>>DANCE

Now do a lesson for everyone.... its Kindergarden so they dont speak engrish.......go go go.....

Im also a sucker.... but I dont know this woman. And she does represent all that is ungodly and horrible...THE HAGWAN......
Ive done some favors, but this hardly fits under the favor category...

and you are right, I told her what I was offered, and if she wanted she could of countered with something right there.......

They probably just want me to patch a problem then probably crawfish me and jab a knife in my back when they found a cheaper solution.

Show up piss drunk and make a good time of it. Make sure your inhibitions are low enough that you'll mention the "dance white monkey, dance thing". Mack on the moms. Reenforce every stereotype they have.

I would like to give the benefit of the doubt, but countless times the Korean Education system has let me down.

Well I dont feel as bad...... I turned off the phone, and Ill leave it off till tonite..she'll probably be calling me constantly....

Good for you. You know you're being played if:
-they appeal to your good nature
-they flatter you too much
-probably more

I bet she wasn't in trouble with her boss over getting a white guy at all.

if you said you'd go, even if pressured, then go
if you never actually said you'd go, then don't go.

Who cares what she thinks: it all comes down to what you said!

You said you'll call her back? You never said you'd come on Saturday?

Then follow RACETRAITOR's advice: turn off the phone until Sunday.

I would go, and hate myself for being pressured into it and be really not so pleasant to the people there... that's just how I am. But what you should do is just tell her flat out, you are not coming, not interested, unless she offers you X per hour. Thanks.

No way. Don't go.

You never said, "yes."

Her crying and complaining/guilt trip is a VERY COMMON Korean negotiating tactic. If you really want to do it, demand extra money UP FRONT. If they won't pay it UP FRONT, then walk right out and go home. You might find them calling you when you are 2 subway stops away. But don't turn around, or teach, until they agree to pay you UP FRONT before you even start. It is another tactic to promise something, then pay less later. Especially if you try to up the rate. So if you do turn around, then get the money UP FRONT. Don't fall for the "I've got to go to the bank while you are teaching, and will pay you at the end of the night" scheme. You must get ALL money UP FRONT.

Get the money first. Otherwise, they will likely lie to you.
