Yes, thanks, I did find that interesting.
Disappointing too in that I had always believed that one could apply for permanent residence after being legally resident, under whatever visa, for more than 8 years. |

It is interesting, and illuminating. Korea makes you jump through a lot of hoops.
In Chile you start out with a visa that is "subject to contract." After a year or two (not sure if it's one or two) of that, you apply for "temporary residency," which lasts for one year. "Temporary residency" allows you to all of the rights and privileges of "permanent residency," except that banks and other business institutions don't want to do business for you -- it's too high risk for them. But after that year, you get "permanent residency," no special contributions of million-dollar investments required. |

This is the new, revised and more liberal law. It used to be difficult for foreigners to get permanent residency.
I checked into it a couple of years ago when I qualified, except for the detail that I am not ethnic Korean. They failed to mention that part in the newspaper report.
Korea, not being an immigrant society, has not faced the issue of non-ethnic citizens yet. That will probably come when they have to have more immigrants because of the low birth rate. It will be very interesting if I'm around at that point. |

Easier are you fucking kidding me?
" have attainments such as being well-behaved and understanding Korean traditions enough to stay permanently in Korea,"
Wonder how they are going to use that part of the "law"? |

Seriously, do they have a written test? A history test? How do they measure this? Is it enough to show that you've lived here X years and had no incidents with the law? |

Does it mention that the interviewer is your former hagwon owner? "Ho, Ho, you miguk don't understand Koreans, but we understand foreigners." |

I notice the link does not work now for some reason. Here is a better one
http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/IMM80/index.do
Just head to the FAQ and you'll find a few answers.
HOWEVER, don't bother with the Q&A because there are 240 unanswered questions on it. buahahahahahha |
