Well from next term I'd be keen to start a bit of extracurricular teaching, for the more needy. I thought about offering to teach in an orphanage or similar institution, but have no idea how I'd go about it or if i could do it legally (I'd be teaching to help the kids, I would want no money).

Anyone done anything like this able to point me in the right direction?

I wouldn't mine getting in on that myself. Teaching the english of course, not learning it.

No ideas though.

Hi Guys

On the WorknPlay.co.kr there is information about some foreigners who go and visit Korean orphans:

Maybe they might be able to point you in the right direction?

Great! The woman who deals with that was my recruiter who got me over here! Very Happy

I've emailed her, shes on holiday till the 7th but then hopefully I can sign up.

If anyone else is interested then sign in below, and I can pass ur details on. The more the merrier, just think of the positive impact you'd be.

Chris

Be sure to follow the rules about teaching for free at orphanages. You can do it wrong and get in a pile of trouble with Immigration.

Well I visited the place today.

First up "teaching" is not what you'd be doing. Assisting the ajumma's looking after the kids is what its all about.

It was pretty quiet today, but I'll definately attend on the weekends. The kids are between 0-8years and are mega sweet. One came hurtling up to me and wouldn't quit hugging my leg for AGES. I enjoyed myself.

Thanks for the link tomato. I'm a bit concerned about the legality but the people there said they get a few volunteers in so I'm gonna wing it till i hear from my recruiter.

This is so cool!

My wife and I will be somewhere (not really sure where yet -- looks like it might be Cheongju) in Korea teaching starting Sept 1, and this is exactly the kind of thing that we would *LOVE* to get involved with!!

R. N. Paulson, let me know if you go to Cheongju.
That's the last place I lived before I came back to Hongseong, and I volunteered at an orphanage there.

Alas its 4.30 am and i'm in a PC Bang it the armpit of Korea, I mean Itaewon....

No chance I'm gonna be in any fit state to be dealing with kids tomorrow, at least not in the morning.

If your around in the afternoon I may pop in, but failing that I'll be in either sunday or one of my remaining vacation days.

And tao, its really as easy as following the link tomato gave and emailin the relevant helper. I'm also asking my recruiter for more info but shes not back till the 8th so it'll be a while before I hear anything.

Its really great tho, the kids are SO adorable.

I've heard (second hand) about people being deported for "working" in an orphanage for no pay ("volunteering" where I come from) on the weekends.
