I am doing a play with my students for their parents at a summer camp. We have use of a projector and laptop. For the last group of kids we ended up making loads of background art etc... but to no avail, as all the work didn't really get appreciated.
This time I'm gonna go for a sound / video show. I want to take scenes from disney films to use as backdrops to our bible stories...
anyone know some good video editing software, preferably opensource/free, where I can capture video from dvd's to use as background ????
thanks |

I don't think it is possible to capture video from DVD's, but if you watch the DVD on your computer and take screenshots you'll have stills that you can use as your background.
The only legitimately free video editing software I'm aware of is Jashaka though I haven't used it. If you do try it out, please let us know how it works.
Derrek will recommend Adobe Premiere, but the learning curve is incredibly steep. I would recommend Pinnacle Studio Plus which is incredibly easy and will do anything that a home enthusiast will ever need to do. Premiere is more for people doing pro stuff anyhow. |

Superhero, what version of Pinnacle are you running, and have you experienced the blue screens and lost videos during rendering that a lot of users have written about on other sites?
I'm also interested in video editing sw, but I haven't read many positive reviews of Pinnacle so far.
Thanks,

I use Pinnacle Studio 8 and have no problems. It's a good program. |

I'm using studio 9.4 and had some problems rendering a DVD, but the solution was easy. Finish editing and then render to DV-AVI after that add your dvd menus and render to DVD. When I did that no problem.
Also I never had a problem making an SVCD or VCD or any sort of web file...wmv, ram, mpeg etc... |

I used the PEGASYS mpeg editor in the end and it worked out fine (nearly), the interface couldn't have been simpler, and it cut everything the way I wanted it to.
Unfortunately it didn't recognize the sound files on the dvd, and so I had no sound. But I wasn't too bothered about that since I didnt really need sound anyway.
You can get a 15day trial here if anyone's interested...
