I'll call you on that one. Koreans, by and large, have a strong aversion to licorice (and root beer).

The Red Door in Itaewon, Hannam Supermarket, or the black market in Namdaemun have assorted goodies.

Hey red licorice rules!! Better than ANY Korean candy or weird rice treats.

You probably would NEVER see a Korean eating black licorice. They probably think its disgusting. But they have NO problem eating buttered squid Rolling Eyes

As for root beer, I brought some with me and gave it to some students to try. They thought it tasted like medicine. Also, at McDonalds, it has root beer stamped on their cup lids which must be imported, coz they dont sell it. It's so strange, ONLY korea doesnt have root beer. All the other asain countries have it. go figure!

warning on the licorice. On the first day of kindie I gace my new class (17 students age 3-7) some twistlers. I never thought I'd see small children spit out candy, throw it up, fake hurl, act like I poisoned them. Koreans REALLY don;t like it.

Yep - same here...I shared out some of the Twizzlers (red) that my family sent me, and the students barfed, gagged, spit it out, made horrible noises, etc.....except one poor boy, about 10 years old, politely continued to nibble on his little by little, although with a look of pure torture on his face.

When I asked him if he liked it he looked down and was very quiet. He finally said to me very politely "No, teacher, I'm sorry, but it's not delicious..." and looked soooo apologetic.

I told him he could throw it away like the others, and he said that he thought they were being rude and that he should continue to eat it politely because my family had sent it to me form Canada and he didn't want to be rude to my country by throwing it away!

I once stumbled on a bottle of ouzo at a grocery store in Taejon--back of the shelf and dusty. I was delighted. Took it home and sipped away like a good boy. One evening a friend came to visit with some beer and soju. We finished that and he asked to try the ouzo.

He spat out the first drink. Tried again and said it was awful. Third drink wasn't so bad. By the fifth he was chugging it like soju. Finished the bottle.

Massive hangover but a good time. Still mourning that I could never find another bottle.

Anyone ever seen a bottle for sale anywhere in the greater Korea area? More specifically Pusan/Changwon area?

I love licorice myself, and have asked about it on the forum before - Koreans do have an aversion to it. It is know here (it's called kamcho) - but it tastes like some traditional herbal medicines, so it doesn't have the pleasant association that we have perhaps...

CAn't help in the Pusan area, but I noticed that they had it listed on the wine list at Santorini , the Greek restaurant in Itaewon, meaning you could buy it by the bottle. Might be worth popping in if you're in Seoul.

Haddon House is a store like Hannam Market. Nearest subway station is Oksu station(orange/#3). Not the easiest to find the first time. Go north from the station, up some stairs along the highway and turn left. Keep going and keep your eyes open after a few hundred meters. If you start going up a rising sidewalk you've gone too far. The store is in the basement level.
