Well we had a class today where we created a set of happy family cards and then played. I must say I think I enjoyed the game as much as the kids.
First off there was general confusion over miss mr master mrs. So after we sorted that out I got them to come up with names of jobs and things associated with them.
We got boring ones like Mr Water the Swimmer. But a couple I thought were awesome, "Mr Cabbage the Kimchi maker" was one of my favs only pipped to the post by Mr Triangle bar the Scientist (i guess they meant the tripod which goes over a bunsen burner).
Try it out with the kids, its lots of fun. I've got another class doing the same thing later today so hopefully I'll have some more gems.. |

| So how do you play? Just making up names and titles to write on cards? |

Just had class 2 do it.
My favourite was Miss Information the Curator's daughter. God knows where she got the word curator from! The only other mildly interesting ones were The Child family, whose profession was Taekwondo Instructor.
The game is very similar to Go Fish, first the kids make up families, choosing a job and a word associated with them. This word becomes the family name.
E.g
Mr Bun the Baker
Mrs Bun the Baker's wife
Miss Bun the Baker's daughter
Master Bun the Baker's son
The kids then make these cards and draw nice pics (takes quite a while).
Then they play. All the cards are dealt out, and the kids must complete a famliy. They go round in a circle, asking each other Do you have Mr/Mrs ______ the ________ they can only ask for a family member if they have one member in their hand (helps the other kids know who has what). If a set is completed then the person who completes it takes it out of their hand and gets one point. The winner is the one with the most sets at the end.
Its not TOO hard for them to understand we played it first with our cards on full display to help them understand. |

Where is the son? In the bedroom. I'm disappointed that you beat me to it.

Nice job slippin' that one in there so SUBTLEY!!!!!!!!!!!
Wish I could get that gig actually - damn pesky contract obligations
Go fish is a useful format. I did it with pets - "Have you got a dog"/ "Yes, I have."
Then I did it with family members - "Have you got a dad"... Unfortunately one girl said "No, I haven't", and burst out into tears - damn pesky family tragedys |
