Abandoned taxes hit a record last year
The amount of taxes that the government gave up on collecting reached a new high last year. According to the Finance Ministry's report presented to the National Assembly yesterday, the government was supposed to receive 131.5 trillion won ($129.7 billion) in tax revenue last year but fell short by 13.7 trillion won, or 10.4 percent.

Out of that amount, the government gave up trying to collect a record 7 trillion won, up 6.4 percent from 2003, because it could not find the taxpayers or the taxpayers did not have enough assets to pay what they owed. The report also noted that the number of delinquent taxpayers who owe at least 100 million won jumped 41.2 percent to 3,421 last year, from 2,423 in 2003.
